hi...
i want to make a mmorpg too, but a mmorpg is a complex project, isnt an easy task. Before to find some 2d or 3d artist, i think that you must start design in a paper, (im making the first design on paper). To this project you must have a server, making a little message protocol to manage all info, (think that hundreds of clients was conected to the server) and a client that gets info from server, and sync with it... after you have designed the mainly server and client, you can start to design the game enviroment, then 2d artist can start to draw little pics, but only to have a drawed definition of a character or locations of the game... after this then you can start programming... why now? because mmorpg are very big project, if you start programming, you probably must rewrite and change a lot of things, i think that this type of projects needs a organization to make a fast and good mmorpg... this is only a personal opinion, these are things that i have thinking because i want to design a mmorpg in the future, and i want to organize all and then start coding...

Sorry for my bad english...
bye.

Im a B3D coder and i use the following process to code games. Follow these steps and you can't go wrong.

- Think Up Game Idea
- Write Down StoryLine
- Draw Characters on Paper (Front/Side/BirdsEye aka Perspective)
- Scan Drawings and Model Then With 3DS Max
- Create Enviorment Items / Buidings / Maps
- Start Coding Enviorment Related Systems (Weather/Particle)
- You've got all you need, Plug It all Into the game

(I alwasy add sound / music last...)

A MMORPG Is a big step and i think you're stting you're ambitions 2 high. If I was you 'd first just make a small game (you and your team using my suggested method.) and upon completion im sure you'll have learned so much you'll have the experience to make a bigger game and lateron an even bigger game untill you reach the experience level to create a MMORPG.....

is this thread dead?

I might be interested in contributing something - like Dreamflower pointed out, don't forget about sound artists ;) ... I take it something epic and orchestral would be in order? I can compose something like this, and I would especially like to do it for a game, I've just never really had anything to ignite me ... I have one short demo song here:

http://www.chillproductions.com/modules ... evered.mp3

Note that this is now exactly four years old, and was made with single instrument samples in a tracker ... nowadays I would use professional multisamples, and I would probably get considerably better results, although this isn't too bad ;)

The music I normally make is techno, electro, house, ambient, sometimes jazzy and sometimes just weird - I have lots of stuff online here:

http://www2.mp3.de/musik/bands/de/2/23872?param=52|12

This may not be that interesting though, if what you're looking for is orchestral stuff - I imagine, with some elements of ambient/electronica to spice it up, a good mix like in Anachronox for example ... gotta luv the music in that game ;)

Oh, and also, I'm a programmer - Delphi and PB - Delphi since about ten years now.

So yes, show us some actual plans, or at least some real ideas, and it's more than likely I'd want to contribute! :)

Can I help?

Post by CoderLaureate »

I'm a web application developer by profession for six years now. I also write desktop applications using VB, Java, B3D, and PB. I'm hosting my own Linux web server farm, and can provide a place to store the web page, cvs repository, ftp, test game server, etc...

Also, have you thought of using Linux as an alternative operating system for your MMORPG server application?

Let me know if I can help.

It seems to me you have never been on a big project. But thats my opinion. I have been on a MMORPG design team "assistant production and design overviser" (that just means I desing and check up on production)(most of my designing is for interactivity) for mercerneraries of astonia. I don't do Astonia any more cause they found a better person than me. I know the steps of designing a small MMORPG, I would like to try a bigger one. lead_rhino@hotmail.com
