PB on Vista beta ?

Post by USCode »

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried running PB on the Windows Vista beta?

Anyone here participating in the beta program and if so, have you tried PB4 on it?

If so, how'd it do? Got any screenshots?

I know it's a stretch but worth a try...

I could give it a shot if I get some free time in the future.

That would be great dracflamloc! I'd appreciate it if you could capture some screenshots as well. I'd be most interested to see what the IDE looks like, what the gadgets (widgets) look like on Vista, etc.

I'm a beta tester for Windows Vista. I tried it on the Vista Beta, it seemed to work fine. Someone in the beta newgroups (i think, maybe it was one of the chat sessions - don't really remember right now) mentioned some issues related to memory but this turned out to be a 'Beta' thing and of course we all know that windows betas are not the most stable thing in the world. As far as what it looks like, it looks like how ever it looks in winXP, cosmetically there doesn't seem to be any difference for the IDE for PB from what it looks like in winXP, of course it also depends on how you have your system set up too for the apperance. BTW, to get the full effect for the graphics in Vista I found out that I needed to dump my older ATI 9800 pro in favor of the ATI 800X series at a minimum for the beta test machine. I didn't ever do any screen shots cause i didn't think about it.

I've just removed the previous beta build yesterday in preperation for a newer build install and i'll check it again with the latest build i install. I don't install every build, i kinda skip builds and do basically every other one, except for beta milestone builds.

@ Edwin,

Generally, you get the beta by becoming a windows beta tester and you do that by applying to MS. However, basically for the Vista beta you have to be invited or had to have already been in the beta program for previous betas, of if you happen to work for a MS Partner company you can get the beta. There are 'other ways' to get it but they are not exactly 'legitimate' and not recommended. I think there is a way to get a preview of the beta from MS also for non-beta testers, don't really remember cause i've been in the beta program since win95 and never had to do that cause beta testers get free copies at the end of the beta.

You can get access to the Betas if you are an MSDN member

Yeah, you bet me to it. Universial MSDN here (via day job). And you have access to download the Vista betas.

Bummer, it was my understanding that even Win32 (non-.NET) based apps would look "Vista-ish" and not like they do in XP?

Per this page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/ ... newvisuals
apps using controls in "comctl32.dll v6" should have the Vista look?

I assumed the PureBasic gadget library used comctl32 controls???
Maybe it's just a settings issue but it would be nice that applications developed with PureBasic don't look "old" by default ...

I uploaded a screenshot I found somewher here in the forums showing 3.94 on vista, the difference to 4.0 shouldn't be that big.

If you check the 'XP skin support', it links to the comctrl32.dll 6 so it should be no problem. Can anyone with vista beta confirm ?

Based on the screenshot that Nik posted, looks like we're AOK?
Anyone have screenshots of PB4 on Vista?
