@fsw:
Thank you for your detailed explanation!
Your German translation is perfect. :-)

Anyway, there seems to be a slight misunderstanding:
My remark "I hope the meaning of our German saying hasn't been distorted by my translation." was referring to my reply:
"You have calmly spoken a true word."
That was my attempt to translate the German saying "Du hast ein wahres Wort gelassen ausgesprochen." :-)

If you're looking for big changes then you might be right. However I learn lots about PB and the other languages in these discussion threads. When the pro and con camps clash, there is lots of good info coming out about a language that I may not have otherwise known.
I agree with Heartbone, and also appreciate the discussions.
I see. I'm sorry if you (or someone else) feels that I disturbed the discussion.
I just wanted to make that small remark, that I posted here initially.

"Our hypothetical Blub programmer wouldn't use either [Cobol or assembly]. Of course he wouldn't program in machine language. That's what compilers are for. And as for Cobol, he doesn't know how anyone can get anything done with it. It doesn't even have x (Blub feature of your choice).

As long as our hypothetical Blub programmer is looking down the power continuum, he knows he's looking down. Languages less powerful than Blub are obviously less powerful, because they're missing some feature he's used to. But when our hypothetical Blub programmer looks in the other direction, up the power continuum, he doesn't realize he's looking up. What he sees are merely weird languages. He probably considers them about equivalent in power to Blub, but with all this other hairy stuff thrown in as well. Blub is good enough for him, because he thinks in Blub.

When we switch to the point of view of a programmer using any of the languages higher up the power continuum, however, we find that he in turn looks down upon Blub. How can you get anything done in Blub? It doesn't even have y.

By induction, the only programmers in a position to see all the differences in power between the various languages are those who understand the most powerful one. (This is probably what Eric Raymond meant about Lisp making you a better programmer.) You can't trust the opinions of the others, because of the Blub paradox: they're satisfied with whatever language they happen to use, because it dictates the way they think about programs."
...Which also sounds like somebody we know.

Thank you for this interesting quote.
If more post in this discussion were on this level, then I would appreciate this discussion, too. :-)

Sorry weavster, but your arguments are utterly incoherent.

First, you draw this silly comparison between libraries and frameworks/VMs:
the.weavster wrote:Most developers using Lua wont create their own low level libraries any more than C# developers would implement their own .NET framework or Java developers would create their own JVM.
Then, you link to a blog post about the virtues of embedded languages:
the.weavster wrote:Professional expert programmers have already got the gig. That's why Qt has QtQuick, EFL has Elua, etc...
And when all else fails, you blame the hardware:
the.weavster wrote:Perhaps you should treat yourself to some 21st century hardware.
The only conclusions that I could draw are that you're either unqualified, or the original point of debate has eluded you altogether.

Nevertheless, thank you for trying.
Little John wrote:You are only posting facts that are in agreement with your prefabricated opinion, while your are ignoring facts that don't.
So big of you to admit that, although I seem to have missed these phantom facts that you claim to have posted. QED's not yours to claim without some definitive QED.

That was my attempt to translate the German saying...
It speaks volumes when you're unintelligible even in your own native tongue.
Little John wrote:I don't want to participate in this ideologic programming language discussion.
But you have LJ, and you don't even realise it.

And to you too, thank you for trying.

I was not and I am not unintelligible in my own native tongue.
It speaks volumes that you do not understand that simple situation.
It also speaks volumes that you write such offtopic stuff, just because you believe you had found something negative about someone.

There you go again, with your vacuous statements, offering no facts whatsoever.

REBOOT: For the benefit of others, the original point of debate stems from this statement (linked to post):
This has been muddled by a handful of detractors, for some unknown reason.

Said the person who's not offered a single fact in this entire thread.

Or refuted any, for that matter. 8)

After all that big talk, I didn't expect you to wimp out this badly.

Thanks for playing.
