Of course, "loss" or "great loss" can refer to the death of a person, but it doesn't necessarily have to refer to a death. "Loss" can also mean e.g.

the disadvantage that is caused when somebody leaves

If in doubt, look into a good ditionary.

By the way, I think netmaestro is a native English speaker, so I'm pretty sure he knows what he is writing.
