Ads on the forums
Re: Ads on the forums
I don't mind ads on the forum as long as they are not in or between posts. I'm running a forum myself and I display ads at the bottom of my pages. Although it doesn't bring in much money, it's enough for me to cover server costs most of the time.
I've been using PB for a little under a year and I really enjoy using it. The fact that the one time license fee covers all future upgrades was what pulled me over the line. It's good to hear Fred is not about to change this.

Re: Ads on the forums
Huh? The license is per person, right? So a large team would pay a large license fee. Also there's the donation option. Just bill it as "support"I think there's also a licensing problem. PB can be used for large projects, in big companies, but even if the lead manager would like to give Fred more money he can't, as there's only one license fee.

Re: Ads on the forums
Indeed it's per person. BTW, you don't need to discuss licence scheme, it's out of topic.

Re: Ads on the forums
It is sad to see that Team PB had decided to go into the advertising business instead of just sticking to programming.
If Team PB needs more income, I would think that actually finishing the GUI Designer and selling it for $40 (USD) would bring in more money within a month of release than the advertising will in a year.
In addition, fix existing bugs in the language instead of adding new features. Release a final free update that fixes everything that is broken. Then after that adopt a more normal policy where upgrades cost money and updates are free. This would also bring in more revenue than the ads.

It would be nice if ads for the competition could be blocked.

Re: Ads on the forums
Why are you making such a fuss about the ads ? Websites all across the internet (both commercial and non-commercial) have ads on them, so whats the big deal ?

I think ads is a good idea, but they seem to be tucked away at the bottom of the page. Maybe you can make
more money from them if they are more visible.

Ads are always intrusive no matter what website they are on (i personally block them all using AdBlock Plus) but the main thrust of this thread is that:freak wrote:Why are you making such a fuss about the ads ? When instead of using ads to generate significant income at a risk of poluting the forum, you are sitting on a great language that you could monetise a whole lot better. As i said before, you will not make anything from ads placed at the bottom of the page so if you need more money, revisit PB's license or develop commercial addons. As was mentioned before, you could actually finish the Visual Designer and sell that separately. This will not split the community at all. How about doing a 'blitz' and creating a more polished 3D command set and sell that separately, this way people who only use PB for apps are not bothered by such things.Fred wrote:we are wondering if putting some ads on the forums would makes some significant income

If we introduced a fine for everybody who thinks he knows better how to market PB then we could give it away for free

From what i'm reading (especially the agressive reply of Digital Wargames) you just get it wrong. We are NOT running out of money (so don't discuss our license model), we are not hoping to do mass money with ads. We have just added a new easy money source, which needed 1 hour of work and with brings some free beers for the team. That's all.

Or a fine for acerbic comments from certain mods? That will get you lot more than a few beers! :roll:freak wrote:If we introduced a fine for everybody who thinks he knows better how to market PB then we could give it away for free

I'm sure the PB team don't seem to understand the messages you sometimes put out to the community.
