I had a few issues where I got steamed early on... there were a few that were rather insulting when I asked a question... But by and large I saw the "kind sarcasm" of an accepted PB Disciple through 99% of the catty answers.

I will admit to a few catty remarks on my own part.

But good natured teasing has always been a part of this forum as well and I would not like to see that squashed in an attempt to be politically correct!

And I STILL think y'all are all jealous that I make the BEST mistakes!!!

IMO there's no excuse for rudeness ([del]unless[/del] even if provoked) it only shows a personality deficiency on the part of the protagonist.
Like Road Rage, people are quick to anger when they feel safely cocooned in their car / computer, because they believe they are safe from any repurcussions.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid answers.

I see no use in saying nothing or even lying just to be "polite".
if you don't tell an idiot he's an idiot, how should he ever know?

social deficiency means, you can't be rude by words but need your fists.
as long you can bash someone with words and don't need physical violence, it's no weakness at all.
oh... and have a nice day.

I disagree.

Perhaps though, I shouldn't say that I disagree with your comment, I should just call you an idiot so that you know what stupid comment yours was! Would that be better?

Social deficiency partly means that you lack tact and feel the need to attack people personally because you are insecure and get defensive when challenged. It doesn't have to go anywhere near physical violence and is still deficient.

I don't think people need to lie, but there are nice ways of disagreeing

True... instead of calling someone an idiot you can simply say:

1> I see you are having ID10t errors...
2> Hmmm... you didn't strain your brain cells much on that did you?
3> Well, the easiest answer isn't always right...
4> So, still hoping for that GED??? (in the USA a "GED" is a General Equiv. Degree for people that dropped out of High School)
5> You really could not find your butt with a map and a mirror could you?
6> It must be sooo discouraging being so ignorant...
7> PEBKC Errors huh? (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair)
8> Don't give up... you have to be right at some point...
9> If I am not mistaken, as you usually are...

or

10> Way to exercise that lack of competence!

Just had to come to terms with the fact that I have no qualifications at all

Doesn't effect my career too much though :P

I think the more anonymous the message system makes you feel, the more likely people are to be rude to downright insulting.

For example go to IGN.com and look up a review of any game. Below it you'll see an area where readers can leave feedback on the review. Because handles are allowed posters are pretty anonymous, instead of providing feedback on the review, the postsers quickly devolve to insulting each other.

Many of the game specific forums on the Steam forums are also as bad, especially the Left for Dead and Team Fortress 2 forums. Those two are well known to be very hostile.

Despite it's many other flaws, perhaps Bob Zale has the right idea by not allowing handles on the PowerBASIC forums.

That's about the only thing that Bob does on those Forums I agree with. Which is partly why I don't have a handle like "Hawk" to go with my pic :o

I doesn't mean saying "You're an idiot" to someone...

but I meant, e.g. if someone is continuously stupid, you could tell him someway instead of not answering at all.
oh... and have a nice day.

Yeah, I kind of like the idea too and had been toying with the idea of changing my user ID here.

In a situation like that, I'd more than likely use private messaging to tell them rather than embarrass them in front of everyone.

sure.
it well depends on the very situation.

but saying nothing just to say nothing to keep the peace is wrong.

... and by the way, who really does write PMs?
most people who stay quiet just stay quiet on every channel until it burns them from inside.

politeness is fine, yes.

but there is a capital misunderstanding within our culture about what "politeness" really means.

silence is golden?
In my eyes, it leads to much more trouble and misunderstanding than an open word.
oh... and have a nice day.
