I don't expect people to be positive to every thing posted on the forum,
but "meh, I don't see the point" responses is close to useless for me.
Constructive criticism maybe?

(not directed at anyone in particular)

Is it that hard really?
These forums are fantastic, I've learned more about programming from these forums than I've done so far Googling stuff.
Which is a testament to the skill and knowledge contained within these forums.

But it's not useless for others, because they're probably trying to understand
why you've chosen a particular approach instead of a more obvious one. ;)
In other words, it's an opportunity to teach them something in a constructive
way (just like you said).
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

I vote for both ways, depending on what the question/idea was,
and even some "ur doin it wrong" when appropriate...

How can you give constructive criticism when you don't see the point of the whole thing. Like:

When someone then replies with "huh?!? You are dim!" then it's really hidden constructive criticism that tells you that using an ordinary Dim would be more than sufficient.

It would of course be better for people to be a bit more objective than giving into their tourette Syndrome, though a response is still better than silence!

I agree with Rescator... but ONLY if the people have something to share... I see a lot more of the whiney "GIVE ME SOME CODE" posts... Used to be, back in the day, you posted something that you did that bombed and folks DID help you untangle it...

THAT was the best teaching I ever had... I was able to learn from my own mistakes!!!

Sometime I think the flames start merely because the person coming to dissagree does so in a harsh way causing people to get defensive.

Often we get person one asking a question, person two offering an idea then a really harsh person three who starts with the phrase "You're Wrong!" rather than "I dissagree" and then person 2 and 3 go at it with flames like it's some sort of reputational issue and person 1 is sitting there going :shock:

Maybe some people get "Dr Wildrow sickness" ;) and answer questions so they look clever then get really angry if they are challenged.

Maybe there should have been a commandment

Sometimes flame start too because people take the replies the wrong way.
If someone says "why'd you do it like that" they take it personally, as if they
are being accused of being stupid for doing it that way. They should read it
literally and then explain why they did it that way, instead of instantly taking
offense and assuming it was attack. People need to stop assuming that any
questioning of their code is an attack. That's my 2 yen. :)
