3D Progress

Post by dmoc »

First of all, please don't mistake this post as a criticism of PB, or an X vs Y, or somehow related to this week's pending release (although I suppose it is a little). I'm just priming ya all for considered opinion.

Up to now I have roughly about 10,000 lines of PB code (thankfully including whitespace and comments 8O ). Over the past week I've been considering switching my development over to using the Torque game engine and C++. My problem is that although I have the bulk of a scenegraph implemented in PB, I have only ended up doing this because the PB-ORGE implemention is somewhat slow to progress. And when I think about it this will always be the case because ORGE is free and open-source and therefore will progress entirely at it's own pace. Then add on the inevitable delay while PB catches up, meaning a PB developer could be looking typically at 6..12 months between each and every update, even bug fixes possibly 8O

I'd really like to continue my scenegraph development in PB as early versions are resulting in a very flexible and fast programs. Oh and incredibly small programs in comparison to *anything* else. Still, I keep berating myself for re-inventing the wheel, not being able to use inbuilt PB features (note ORGE is a dll) and not just getting on with the 3D applications I originally wanted to develop. Arrr, feeling better now I've vented my frustration

I know what you mean. I use to code lots of apps that work with or enhance
other products (mainly the Quake games, and PureBasic a bit [remember
vis2pure?]) but have decided long ago that it's not worth the effort, as the
other apps change too constantly for me to bother keeping up with. From
now on, I've got a self-made rule to only code my own original apps that
don't interact with or support any others.

Ha! But there in lies the problem: don't you find yourself coding too much "support" facilities rather than your main app? My other main problem is that, being unemployed, I'm likely to run out of money before I get my apps up and running and fully tested to the point where I have a potential commercial product :x I also go through ever increasing periods where I just can't be bothered coding at all (maybe I'm a burn-out). The most frustrating thing is I have ideas for other apps which are just gnawing away at me to the point where, if I had enough money, I'd gladly pay someone else to help implement.

Hehehe, sometimes. My main app that I'm coding now is actually a set of
enhancements to Windows itself, but it's worth doing because the functions
are badly needed.

LOL -- we're very much alike! Remember how I was made redundant not
long ago, but then got employed again? Well, I ended up quitting from that
job after only a month because it didn't work out, so now I am living off the
redundancy money and looking for work. Read on...

Same! I have all the time in the world to code, but I haven't worked on
my app for months now. All I do is play games instead, and apply for jobs.
I don't even contribute here as much as I used to.

Again, the same as me! I've got lots of half-finished apps that I can't
finish due to lack of knowledge too. Oh well.

If only I liked playing games, that would at least be a distraction. As it is my new found "hobby" seems to be staring at code until I almost believe I see the Matrix
