I know, i know (i am using it), but I meant that Vista could have been much more of a hit if Microsoft decided to put eye-candy where it belongs (in the toilet) and focus on stability, speed, low resource consumption. Just like XP was (and still is).

But if they did that, then what would be the incentive for Vista?

I can't see why they couldn't just turn around and say "well, we've peaked with XP. Let's re-release XP for another 5 years and make billions with no further effort involved on our behalf. It would certainly be more stable than a new os..."

Agreed, but I didn't say just re-release it. I was thinking to something like an overall improvement over the old codebase. They did an effort, to design a new skin, new ways to annoy users (UAC - i see it like a very user annoying way to stop malware, just like anti-cracking is for piracy) and build new, rounded cardboard boxes to sell the OS in.

Don't take my rant too serious though, maybe there are benefits that i don't see because I don't have Vista and never used it in my life. It wouldn't work on my PC anyway .

There is only one reason for Vista I can see - games.

The problem is, where is the glut of DirectX 10 games? All the developers seem to be focussing on Xbox 360 and PS3 (both at DirectX 9 level of games) and then if they do release it on PC, there is no point making a DirectX 10 only version, when a lot of your user base has XP installed...

No, M$ really did screw up and more or less kill PC gaming with Vista

 Even microsoft will never kill PC gaming. PC Gaming is stronger than its ever been, its just that people dont buy M$s hype so much these days, which is good. Now if everyone would just move to Linux, everything would be alright....

Oh no, I agree that PC gaming will never die, just with Vista.

"Hey, I've got a game that is awesome!"
"Wow! what are you releasing it on?"
"Vista!"
"... You know there are about 2 installs of Vista worldwide don't you?"
"Yeah! I'll saturate the market! My backer said that market saturation is a good thing!"

I thought Vista was pretty cool and got an unfair press... until I installed Ubuntu. I have been totally converted in about 2 weeks. Ubuntu starts quickly without all the hard disk chugging and thrashing that Vista seems to go in for. Vista looks pretty till you've seen compiz fusion. Vista's start menu is confusing, it has too many needless sections and modes whereas Ubuntu is very minimalistic. The only problem I had with Ubuntu was I had to compile my own sound drivers which was very stressful and took about 3 hours of trying! But I'm glad I stuck with it. I'm keeping Vista though, and using Vista's bootloader to boot Ubuntu. I just installed Civ IV on Vista which I am looking forward to investigate as I rarely play games and would like to get back into them.

Vista versions

Post by EdzUp[SD] »

The thing I dont like about Vista is the driver issues, with XP you put in a DVD-RW drive and if it dont recognise it XP uses the generic driver that works. Vista doesnt it keeps coming up with a stupid driver request ever time you startup and heaven forbit you tell it not to ask again it stops you using the device until you give it the driver (if you are lucky enough to have one exist for that device).

The devices I have had problems with are USB keys (hotplug, yeah right), a Lite-On DH20A4P DVD-RW drive

None of those devices have even sniffed of a problem under the reinstall of XP I dont after about two weeks of Vista Ultimate.

Been using Vista for about 3 weeks now and once I turned UAC (and a few other things) off, I find that I don't mind it at all. True, I see little difference between Vista and XP (at least in terms of the work I do) but it does look 'nice' nonetheless.

Okay, things like Word 2003 and Frontpage 2003 refuse to save anything on the hard drive unless it is in my 'user' space, but even that isn't a major inconvenience - at least not yet! A system restore took 15 minutes yesterday which did cause me a little concern, but in general I wouldn't say that I have any reason to dislike it.

I wish someone had explained folder 'junctions' to me though as that would have avoided one hell of a lot of hassle recently!

Sorry to bump this thread up but it's better than starting a new one :D

I've not used Vista (quite happy with XP to be quite honest!) but I was wondering, the whole DirectX thing... I know it's DX10 but I was planning on having a bash at making something that might take a considerable amount of time/effort with the Haaf's Game Engine wrapper that neotoma has made.

That engine however is DX8 and I read a lot about compatibility issues - done a google search but can only seem to get forums/discussions on the subject from the pre-release of Vista. Have they fixed anything along the way so that Vista can still run DX8 and pre-DX10 games and software?

Cheers
