DSL does not worth it. Too many packages to be installed. Like Fred said : It wouldn't be so small anymore. I'm trying now Mandriva (Ex-MandrakeLinux) and I see that it has all the needed packages included... If it's cool and works ok, maybe we'll use it.

I foudn a nice method to use my vmware version of PureWinLin!
Though it's own X-Server doesn't run "su root" password "pbroot" and then "sshd" (Do not do this when you haven't got a firewall which blocks intrusion into the vm (for example a router with closed port should be enough)). Then I installed Cygwin and logged into the VM with ssh from an xterminal (you can use other X-Server implementations for this too). Then I could start X-Software like the Purebasic IDE on the VM and have their windows displayed as if they were real Windows, it's difficult but it works. It runs pritty well since the virtual network connection is damn fast. This makes me believe that the best solution for our problem would be to get PureWinLins X-Server running in VMWare Player it's just a lot faster then QEMU...

Nik wrote:I just tried Puppy Linux because it's small but it's hell of dumb it has programs like excel and word and hundreds of other programs nobody needs on it's zipped 60 mb and you can even install new software however you can't install gcc form their package system who needs linux without gcc????
You need to dl usr_devx.sfs, which includes a full suite of dev tools, including gcc. Place it in the same location as the pup001 file (your 'home' folder in cramfs format). You need the pup001 file in order for any changes you make (and files you dl) to be 'persistent'.

I placed both of the above files onto a usb stick, booted the puppy cd, and it picked up both. Then I dl'd PB, unpacked it, tweaked the environment a bit to run from my home folder, and it worked fine.

You could also just place the two files at the root of your 'C' drive; the puppy cd will find them there as well.

Interesting note: you can do a HD 'install', which doesn't actually mess with your partition (though it does alter your boot.ini file under Win2k/XP). It uses the pup001 file located on the HD. I've done this too, and it's a bit faster.

At any rate, puppy would be a good candidate. It uses a slightly older version of GTK2, so the purebasic_gtk2 version runs fine without the text issues that occur with later versions of GTK2.

Just my 2cents....

Knoppix is huge and it's a live distribution, I don't think it's easy to integrate something in it as well as it's hard to install something like PB on it...
btw don't need it for myself I'm a very very very happy Ubuntu Dapper Drake user^^

@Nik. Can you create an Ubuntu distribution ready for burning to a CD with PB3.94 Demo installed? Any chances? There are users that cannot install a connection (like me) and there's no way to use PB for us :x :x :x. Would it be hard to do that?

Don't know how to integrate something in a distribution sorry, but hm if Fred would be Ubuntu user he could create a dpkg package wich not only works on debian, I suspect he is running debian sarge at the moment which is also why he has an older gtk version which displays scintilla right.

I don't think he will do that... I mean he has no reason besides my problem :(. The majority has a working connection on linux so it's not necessary. However a "Full PB" package with all the dependencies and packages would be extraordinary.

Can you help me with this? Maybe you know more than me...

I've got the VPN like this:

Server ip : 10.0.0.200
My static IP: 10.0.0.210
Netmask 255.255.255.0
No encryption.

How can I integrate this settings in Linux? I tried the PPTP dialer and it returns an error...

No because you have to install those devel libraries into the system default folders, and on CD you have no write-access to them.
And things like Knoppix doesn't come with GTk-devel installed??? That's insane but I don't doubt you.
I got PB for linux working on a Knoppix 3.6 live cd (once installed to hard drive) and I think knoppix is at 5.0 now....
I wonder if they still have them in there now.....

Once i get a new net connection i might try to do something with knoppix and PB
