HardDisk buffer - What are your experiences?

Post by merendo »

Hi all

I am about to buy a new harddisk (overdue aucs) and i have two options. Both harddisks are manufactured by Western Digital. They have 80GB capacity - but one has 2MBytes of buffer and the other one 8MB but is 8 euros more expensive. Does the bigger buffer really increase (noticeable) performance? If so, do you think it's worth 8 euro? (about 5,50 UK Pounds and 10 USD)

Thank you! merendo

My experience with that is yes...

I have bought a while a go a 40GB IBM harddisk with 4mb buffer...

Performance increased like hell!

With the same CPU (Duron 1K) using CCE encoder these where the results:

1 DIVX - 720x240 to DVD

Old harddisk: 0.80 realtime encoding
New harddisk: 1.30 realtime encoding !!!

Those extra euros are worth it! Especially in running windows and other harddisk intense software...

But i won't use Windoze long anymore (Already ordered Mandrake but UPS seems to do it in a comfortable pace *lol*)

However, if you think it really increases performance, i would trust you even if i were blind :)

Thank you for that help!!!!!!! Bye! merendo

You are talking about the BB (2 MB) and JB (8 MB) models. JB is indeed a bit faster (& I mean noticeable from the overall performance of the PC, but I might trick myself). My main point to prefer JB is that WD issues a longer warranty on them (3 years) though.

Don't do that. I have just read an article about obesity. About 20 percent of all men and 25 percent of all women are too fat. So be very careful what you eat!

But you get plenty of exercise around here, what with all the kicking with the heavy steel toe boots ;)
If you paint your butt blue and glue the hole shut you just themed your ass but lost the functionality.
