ddhelp... What's that? (Makes my machine crash!)

Post by merendo »

Hi all

I have a little (big!) problem with my new GFX Card. As you can see it is a Radeon 9200 SE 64MB by ATI.

Now Windoze shows an error when exiting a PB programme (Not every programme, it seems as this error is caused by programmes which call a function from the Sprite3D lib) 'ddhelp has caused a crash and windoze is now exiting the currently running programme'. When i try to run another app, which uses fullscreen (no matter, if PB or not), the app crashes.

This has only appeared since i got my new GFX-Card, the old one worked perfeclty.

What could cause this Error? I have DirectX 9.0 on my system.

Has anybody made similiar experiences?

Thanks! merendo

Hmm...

Sounds like a DirectX problem. Do you have the latest drivers installed?

Just downloaded... Well, tried to install, then, after a reboot, windoze has set back the GFX to 16 colors GFX, then i tried to set the GFX mode back to 16 bit, then windoze crashed, reboot again (!) and entered windoze then everything works. I wonder if this is normal.

However, the error still appears. I guess that the dd in ddhelp is for DirectDraw... Does anyone know what this 'ddhelp' really does?

Does anybody else have an ATI Radeon 9200 SE inside the case?

Bye! merendo

Seems you use windows 98...

Does your Motherboard support AGP 8x?
You'll need to get the latest motherboard drivers to use the card correctly!

If that does not work, try setting the bios to AGP, then AGP 2x then AGP4x. If that does not work, try lowering the AGP transfer rate in the BIOS, usually it's positioned at the highest speed 256, try reducing it a bit.

You see Win98 was not designed for AGP so there could be lot's of instability with the new AGP buses/speeds (basicly a BIOS/DRIVER/KERNEL problem)

My motherboard supports AGP up to 4x, so it does not support AGP 8x but the GFX-Card supports up to 8x.

I will try to download the latest motherboard drivers.

Thank you for your help, are you some kind of IT-Professional? :)

-- edit --

Doom, the server of my motherboard-manufacturers site seems to be down.

Do you think that a BIOS-Update could also help?

What was your latest GFX Card.

Did it had a NVidia Chipset?

If so uninstall all drivers related to that card (NVidia - Detonator)
Or Reinstall your windows, that is drastic but it would fix the problem.

That's an Software problem, if it was the hardware you couldn't start your computer. Probaly your board would give some kind of Beep Error.

By the way try to see the specs for your GFX Card and Board to see if they are compatible.

Another thing, its possible that the new card is not working correctly also.
You should test it in other computer if possible.

Before the Radeon, i had a Creative Blaster with a 3DFX Banshee Chip.

That's true, i have not reinstalled Windoze after installing the new GFX Card. Could this be a problem?

When you install new hardware, windows doesn't uninstall the drivers that were installed before, so you may have some kind of conflict between drivers.

I take it that you did run DXDIAG just to check ?

The M/Board drivers could definately help.

A reinstall would make sure the system is 'clean'

You might want to try XP ;) ( Better support for the latest cards )

Good luck :)

I would never install WinXP (price and spyfunctions)...

Well, soon i ll have Mandrake Linux and then all my problems will be gone.

However, i have downloaded the latest motherboard and GFX-Card drivers and also installed them but the problem persists.

I have also downloaded the latest DirectX (and of course installed) but it changes nothing. How can i install a previous version of DX?

I have made a screenshot of the error. Perhaps it would help....

Great. I have tried almost everything now. I have updated my BIOS to the latest version.

I have also tried to install DirectX 8.0 but it aborts the installation. It seems as it does not install previous versions.

Please, do you have any other solution for my problem?
