[GAME] Santaban - A Christmas-themed Sokoban clone

Post by Padraig »

Ho ho ho guys!

I released a small Sokoban clone in a Christmas setting coded in Purebasic the other day in case anyone wants to have look. It features 50 levels of pressie shoving fun accompanied by some nice Christmas tunes.

It is available as a 100% free download on itch.io: https://joulopukki-games.itch.io/santaban

In advance some impressions of what to expect:

I have an arthritic mother that prefers to play games mouse only. Would you be able to make a full mouse mode to this game?
I guess astar pathfinding would have to be implemented? IDK

Thanks Bitblazer! :)

@Jeromyal: The game wasn't designed with mouse control in mind at any point. Therefore I won't be able to easily add it at the moment, mainly due to lack of time, sorry! I will consider it for an update though, should there be one.

Crikey! I haven't played a 'sokoban' type games since the old days of DOS and the original sokoban types and I remember solving the odd level or two then and now it's much harder for my old brain.

Finally passed level one and realised how many more to go (Groooooaaaan).

Great game Padraig, I can see myself not getting any work done around here:):)

Beautiful, it reminds me of the 90s' Sokoban in 4 colors on CGA screen. :D
Could you make a windowed version ? because on our current big screens (ie: 34") you have to move back a meter to play it.
I'm still stuck at level 1, OMG my old brain need WD-40 :|

Hehe, thank you. :)

You can press F11 to toggle windowed mode at any time and then resize the window to whatever size fits best for your screen. You can also pass "-win" as a command line parameter to have it start directly in windowed mode. It's probably best to create a shortcut for that then.

Hum, I'm ashamed,   me who tells newcomers to read the doc, I hadn't read the Readme
[F11] switches between fullscreen and windowed mode.
Maybe it would be interesting to set the default window mode?
Possible improvements:
- Pause button also mutes music
- Possibility to change the volume level without turning it off completely
- Saving finished levels in a file

No worries, I worked in tech support, I'm used to people not reading instructions. :)

Well, it's a retro game and in my book retro means full screen, that's why I made that the default mode. If you want to start in windowed mode just create a shortcut with the command line parameter mentioned in my last post and you will never see the full screen mode again until you solved the remaining levels (given you don't press F11 by accident )
The other suggested improvements are noted with thanks. I'll consider them, should there be an update at any time. Even though I really do like the old school level passwords. Retro, you know... ;)

Thank you very much guys :)

It uses OS specific functions (for resizing the window, adding a custom font etc.) and I also highly doubt that it would just compile or run without any further adjustments and erros respectively, even if those functions have been removed. So, unfortunately no can do at the moment, as I just don't have the time for it. But I have added macOS to the wishlist along with the other suggestions for a potential update. ;-)

Oh and in case someone's running Linux. It should work fine in Wine, at least it does on my setup.
