Can't you just open a screen and see if the screen is cleared or is full of random crap?
If you paint your butt blue and glue the hole shut you just themed your ass but lost the functionality.

No, I'm doing ogl stuff and using OpenScreen/ OpenWindowedScreen for on-the-fly switching. Before I go off on a poss wild goose chase I thought I'd check here if these commands specifically clear out the gfx memory. I assumed (wrongly as it turns out) that this would be a quick and easy one for Fred to answer. Unfortunately, for me, Fred appears *very* selective when it comes to answering peoples queries.
