in 12.10 go to the app centre type in Gnome Shell
choose it install it
log out
on the log in window click the gear icon
choose Gnome Shell classic
click OK
log in

then it should remember

if you installed the shell via the torrent perhaps it's not compatible

Hi Idle thanks for reply yes i had installed gnome shell via apt. have abandoned ubuntu now and gone with solusOS and all is running fine :D that was the problem with ubuntu not remembering. also installing guest additions had no effect on ubuntu screen resize but works fine on solusOS
