Tech demo?

Post by Polo »

There's a few examples here and there, but can we see something using the "latest" (ie last 5 years) technology built with PB Ogre?
It seems the built in lights procedures doesn't use per pixel lightning - how do you use it? If you have to use a shader for that, it's not very convenient as DirectX is used by default on Windows and OpenGL elsewhere.
Other nice effects would be screen space ambient occlusion and such.

It's just random questions and I might have said some nonsense on the lightning which I didn't test much ;)

After looking at Ogre's feature on its website, it seems there are no advanced rendering directly shipped with the engine, you can use shaders but there's nothing to use out of the box.
Is there any shaders that would work (on all OSes) and that would showcase the effects that you would expect from a modern 3d engine?

You mean like a 1.2 million US$ engine ? I don't think so :). Keep in mind than industry leading 3D engine like Unreal Engine ou CryEngine are done by many very skilled developpers since years to achieve these results. It's very unlikely than any free engines will reach that quality anytime soon. Now, if you look at the Ogre Showcase, it's still very good IMHO.

No of course not, but some kind of per pixel lightning, better looking shadows would be quite nice ;)
Engine like Leadwerks have a set of shaders ready to use which includes SSAO, deferred lightning and so on, well this engine isn't free so it might not be the best example ;)

Don't forget about render baking. This is where you bake shadows on the texture in your 3D app. I know blender can do this but there's also an app called Gile[s] that was meant for this. This is a way of giving nice static shadowing without requiring extra resources.
