XYPlorer on sale September 5, 50% off Lifetime Pro. License

Post by Zach »

Just received this mail in my inbox.

If you are looking for something to replace Windows Explorer, then XYPlorer is a great contender. It has all kinds of features I can't even begin to list, that make things so much easier, including multi-tabbed / multi-pane browsing. Scripting, custom commands, and lots of multimedia management features.

The sale is 50% for the Lifetime License for the Pro version (includes -everything-) which is usually quite pricey.. I know I plan on picking it up, since I've been using Demos for a while now and can't live without it. It's a really great tool :thumb:

Opus looked good, but that is all, i don't need a good looking manager,
i like small tools with power in it

I actually use xyplorer too. It is a very nice tool.

I have a weakness for bitsdujour sales. I got xyplorer some time ago and then splurged on opus when they had it a month or so ago.

I need to stay away from btj

Amazement for his reckless courage in sticking to it.

I understand he has probably used win32 api for all, and the only VB6 code we can find in the resulting program is what can be done with the core language itself. And for a software of this kind the slow code generated by PB is not a big problem. 90% of the time is spent on the filesystem or inside APIs.

I'm just trying it so I cannot know how stable is it, but it looks like a very well done job.

For the moment I like it, but there is so much to try. I'll do it.

Anyway MS stated, if I recall correctly, the runtime of VB6 is guaranteed to work for the lifetime of Windows 8 too. After that he would probably need to reconsider all this.

With a 32-Bit Filemanager on a 64-Bit System you will have ever problems with 64-bit shellextension, with wowdirs and so on.

Total Commander 8.1 64-Bit forever

I have 32bit versions of the shell extensions I need.. which right now is only 7zip and Teracopy

./shrug?

Although the author says he compiles it all to machine code, and "not a single byte of VB code is present". I don't know how dubious a claim that is though.
But it is a very good program that works like anything else I've ever used. I never expected to hear it was coded in VB6, however I do have concerns going forward about 64-bit.

Maybe someone should send him a copy of PB....

I used to know the original developer of this called Jonathan Potter, he lived in Adelaide, South Australia at the time and he was a very good programmer for the Amiga at that time, and probably still is today, he used to work with a guy called Andrew Wilson who created the Amiga Phoenix board, that replaced the 1000 board, with supercharged A2000/3000, I got some hardware mods done by him for my Amiga to speed it up and make the audio more Hi Fidelity, truly these people were real hardware/software innovators for the time. The Bill Gates and Steve Jobs types, pale in comparison to these guys, as these people were genuine pioneers, and really did the hands on stuff, very modest and not use other people to come up with money making ideas, then piss on them to make mega bucks for themselves.

Another good choice for a cross platform file managers is muCommander.
Available for: Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, *BSD, Solaris etc. (in 27 languages).
Downside: Java runtime needed.

Almost forgot to mention: It's free software (GPL).

Thanks, but I'll keep my Altap Salamander. The base price is $29.95 USD which includes a bunch of plug-in extensions, for there are three plug-ins that you have to buy, they are, Pict View, WinSCP, and Self Extrator. If you want all three plug-ins, the price is $53.80 USD. I've been using it for five years now and still haven't used all of its many features. And if that isn't enough, with its plug-in system it's extendable. And most Explorer extensions work through it too.
