Windows 7 Starter

I am thinking of buying an Acer Aspire One D255 Netbook that are on special, but it only got 7 Starter and Android.
I don't really need the extra features Home Premium offers.
Are there any limitations will this pose for using with Purebasic

Well yes, if you are going to be programming, the tiny screen is a severe limitation in my opinion. As a device, it's designed for occasional use, it probably does not want the typical hours-on-end hammering that developers subject their keyboards to.

Not sure if PB can compile on Intel Atom N550 processors, no doubt somebody has tried it.

I don't see why it won't work on the Atom? It's just a mobile x86 CPU like other mobile chips before it.

I would personally love to have a Netbook to develop with PB. Its small enough that you can work from bed when you're sick (or just lazy) if you want to Not to mention anywhere else you might be, on the go, when an idea hits you.

Plus with the Intel App store that will eventually come pre-installed on millions of netbooks, it gives you a great audience for Games and Programs just like the Apple Store does for iPhone products.

Netbooks are going to be a big market boom in the future, and what better way to be prepared than to have one to develop and test on? They also make considerations such as GUI and other graphics easier to deal with, because of the fixed resolution.

I work on an Atom, in fact mine's an Aspire 110, with a 9" screen.

PureBasic just works fine on it - dual booting with both Linux (Debian) and Windows XP (I installed my, er, "own", copy, ahem ahem).

Ignore what people say, you can adapt to anything.

Works fine on a netbook, I occaisionally work on an Asus Eee PC with PureBasic without any problems.

....wow, I'm using two 19" screens, couldn't live without them (unless replaced with bigger ones)

....I always scribble my ideas down on paper first (not tons of specific code).

As I have two laptops one with XP Home 9 years old and the other Vista Home Premium 2 years old that does all the multimedia stuff I need to do, I have decided to get a smaller, lighter and more portable option, and a Netbook would be the way to go this time.

My main concern was if the limitations of Windows 7 Starter version would pose any restrictions with programming with PB, according to Foz and ts-soft it seems the hardware should work ok. Of all the information I can glean from the web it seems 7 Starter don't have all the multimedia bells and whistles Home Premium does, that I don't need anyhow.

I can only assume PB should work as normal with 7 Starter and I will be able to test my programs on all three Win Op systems to make sure everything works consistently.

I've got Windows 7 Starter on my Netbook and Windows 7 Home Premium I think it is for my 17" laptop. So far, in real world use, I have found nothing that cannot be done on either machine. Yes they have some features missing, when compared to more expensive editions, but they are features I do not want, or need.

My Netbook has surprised me, in that I now use it way more than my laptop or desktop. It's the unconscious portability. I've recommended Netbooks to numerous people and they have all been delighted.

I'm not saying I would use one as my primary work machine, I still much prefer a desktop, but otherwise they are excellent and full powerered.

If I used a laptop that was not synched to a desktop I would want Win7 Pro on it because of the image backup. The superiority of built-in imaging over other commercial programs is not in the actual backup but in disaster recovery. Unlike BartPE-type solutions where drivers for the latest hardware may be unavailable...you get easy to create, bootable media with drivers you can count on. Beyond that it is MUCH easier do things like yank the system disk and install a larger blank disk. If you boot from recovery media, Win7 Pro can find the latest backup image on an external drive and load it while you do...nothing. You do not even have to format or partition the new disk.

PB works fine on my Acer Aspire with Windows 7 Starter. I did upgrade to Windows 7 Home to get some added utilities.
