Facebook details for all to see

Post by PB »

From http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20012115-245.html :

"A researcher has compiled a list of more than 170 million Facebook users
and the Web address of their profile page on the site and released it on a
file-sharing site, meaning it is making the rounds of thousands of computers
instead of just being accessible via a search on Facebook."

And also:

"Once I have the name and URL of a user, I can view, by default, their picture,
friends, information about them, and some other details"

Hope you all have your privacy settings to "High"! Downloading it now.
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

According to the article, nothing was leaked. It is all publicly available information. The guy just collected it is all.

Complaining that the whole world can see your data after you made it available to the whole world. That's just irony

He used a trick to bypass a facebook privacy setting and collected information which users thought was not available without their permission.

Not quite. The article said that he said: "if any searchable user has friends that are
non-searchable, those friends just opted into being searched, like it or not!"

In other words, if you Freak were private, and Fred wasn't, and you are friends,
then I just need to search Fred to see that you exist, and then I can look at
your profile. So, no, it's not quite publically available info because some people
don't make their profile public in the first place.

Yes, but as far as i understand the article, he then only gets their name and picture, not all private data.
This btw, is also information that facebook is throwing around randomly. Whenever i get one of those "somebody invited you to facebook" emails, it contains the name and picture of some of their "friends" as well.

I don't find this the least bit surprising.

True. But it means that people who have hidden profiles can now be found,
insofar that their profile gets exposed without their permission. Annoying!

Where did you hear that?

Inspired by this I'm now working on some code to dictionary attack facebook users; should be fun to see how successful it is!
EDIT: It was very successful and shows me that I can harvest hundreds of logins with it each day. Should I upload this to ThePirateBay? (I'm not that stupid)
I like logic, hence I dislike humans but love computers.
