Some "I need a Procedure"-Board?

Post by Franky »

Hi there. :D

First I have to say sorry for my english, I don´t know if it´s good enough to make you understanding me. School is gone since 2 years now

Here is the Topic
When surfing through "Feature Request & Wishlist", I often see those "BlablablaCommand()" - Requests and I asked my self, if it wouldn´t be better to create a Subforum like "I need a procedure" or something like this.

My reason

1.)Those "Feature Request and Wishlist" seems to be a "Fred/Freak, please do it"- Board. People say "I want it" , people say "I don´t need it". But noone says: "Here it is, just for you".

2.)Posting those requests under Codingquestions makes people answer like "You could do it like this" without posting the finished Procedure.
Please don´t understand me wrong
-Of course, "CodingQuestions" is not a "Please give me a finished Code"-Board.
-And of course, a programmer should write his own programs

-But these "I need a command"-Requests are nothing else than this in my opinion.

-And another question is if it is always a bad thing to ask for someone to write some code for you. For me, some parts of coding are just a piece of pain. And since programming is just a hobby, it´s a question if you/I really have to take this pain, if there are people, who like those things, I don´t like.

In my opinion, there are some good things that would come with a "I need a procedure"-Board:
1.)It could free the "Feature-Request and Wishlist"-Board of those topics.

2.)It could be easier for people to ask for those things. In "Feature Request and Wishlist", they are often ignored, so that you don´t get, what you need. In this board, you could ask without someone telling you "Do your crap on your own, bastard".

3.)Having a look at the "I need a procedure"-Board could give you a little job to do if you´re bored.

4)I don´t know in how far there are commercial projects in PB, but this board could help you make some $ in between. ("zwischendurch" :?: ).

5.)In my opinion, it´s not Freds job, to implement more and more functions and libraries. Those are things, everyone of us could do. Freds job should be to work on the compiler, I mean on this program, we can´t work on, because we don´t have the source.

How should postings look like
1.)What do I need
2.)What will I give you for your help
3.)Will this code be open/free to use.

OK, that´s my opinion, now I want to hear yours.

PS: Thanks to DarkDragon for translation of "kommerziell"

That was one of the features of the PowerBASIC forums I liked, they had a section devoted entirely to source code. You could post a function or procedure or an entire program. When I was using PowerBASIC it was my favorite section of the forums.

We could use the Tips and Tricks section of these forums for that, but a separate source code section would be better IMO.

One of the rules of PowerBASIC's source code section was that it was only for source code, if you wanted to discus the posted source code you were asked to do it in another section of the forum so for the most part the source code section had nothing but source code.

And I agree that some of those posts are just people being lazy. IMO if the function is already there or is added, great! But if not, it's no big deal to code it myself.

I think a snippets board would be a useful addition :)

I think part of the problem is that the forum search system is inadequate. You can't search on a post title, only it's contents. This makes it nearly impossible to search for information about a PB languange keyword as it will turn up too many hits.

Trying to find people specifically discussing the Len() proc for some bug think you might have hit and you realise most code has Len in it somewhere. But how often is Len() in the title? probably only when thats the topic of the post.

Maybe it's time to dish out my offline forum project again, I was making good progress till I got distracted.

I'd say no. I like the forum as it is. There's also the code archive, and the tips and tricks section is good enough for my taste.

@blueznl: I like the Codes-Tricks&-Tips-Section, too, but there is no real place to ask for a procedure.

sure there is, the General Discussion forum which is defined as "Everything else that doesn't fall into one of the other PB categories."

Just because its called General Discussion and not 'Ask for a Procedure' doesn't mean you can't ask if someone has a procedure or not in there. (I don't think at least.)

I think he has spent the last 8 years stoned!

Still... he ain't stupid enough to go hunting with Cheney

I voted no. Only because I am not sure and I err on the side of caution. I think the first thread does this well enough.
Binarily speaking... it takes 10 to Tango!!!
