Sonic versus Mario [rant alert, old-skool alert]
Hi!
This part probably does not relate to the topic subject, but in case someone noticed I was offline for some time due to a personal change in my life and change of ISP. Do not worry though, everything is fine now I think.
This is not a common Sonic versus Mario thread, but rather discussion about the recent games which have incorporated both heroes as playable characters. Particularly I mean the games "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games" and "Super Smash Bros. Brawl". Now let me tell you a little about my past regarding the gaming scene; I actually was grown up with a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), soon followed by my sweet GameCube. At these times I was a real fan of Mario, but as soon as my uncle got hired at SEGA and gave me a SEGA HKT-01 "Katana" Development Kit, I started to like Sonic even more than Mario. This is not really a part of the thread, but recently my father was accepted for a job at SEGA too and he will be participating in the beta testing of the new Sonic game planned for 2008. Hihi I guess this means I will be getting a PlayStation 3 or XBOX 360 development kit sometime ^_^. Now with my Wii I play most GameCube Sonic titles on it and I was really happy that Sonic and Mario were not at that time in any game together.
However Sonic and Mario are already playable characters in the two aforementioned games. Is this some kind of marketing with that Nintendo is trying to pull out more sales of their Wii? Why did particularly SEGA take part in developing these games? I asked both my father and uncle, but as they work in other departments than the directors and sales management they can not get any details on this.
I find these recently happening things way too obscure and I am not sure if I should be a fan of the blue hedgehog anymore. This leaves me to Mega Man X of Capcom I guess as I got a copy of Mega Man X Collection last month and enjoyed it quite much, but not as much as I enjoyed Sonic or even Mario...@_@
Hmm I think I write too much useless threads, I need to get a break >_<
Cheers,
Irene

well since Sega left the hardware business, Nintendo are no longer competion, just a way to earn money, pure and simple.
Sega/nintendo are purposely exploiting people who are around 30 years old right now in a kind of "Oh I played Sonic/Mario when I was a teenager" and using said exploitation to infuence their kids with how good both game styles were. Can't say it is a bad strategy personally, looks like a win - win situation as long as the games are good

Marketing... I knew it actually. I do not know about you, but I have heard rumours about SEGA co-operating with Sony on a prototype console.LuCiFeR[SD] wrote:well since Sega left the hardware business, Nintendo are no longer competion, just a way to earn money, pure and simple.

i hope this is not a real fact
dreamcast was way more better than ps2, sony marketing killed her ;/ that was not fair.
hope that sega will not betray the dreamcast memory by helping the ones who killed it .
anyway, i'm not a fan of sonic, i tend to prefer mario, because sonic gameplay is way too fast for me
but my favourite character of all time was rockford from boulder dash game dunno why

I've not heard any such rumour myself, but at the end of the day it will all end up coming down to money again. If Sega make a few hundred million, then they will be happy.Irene wrote:Marketing... I honestly can't comment an which console was better... I never actually used a dreamcast. The PS2 isn't a bad machine though. Perhaps I will try to get my hands on a dreamcast, just for curiosity sake.case wrote:i hope this is not a real fact

Bleh! I'm old enough to remember when Sega actually had a computer and I used to code wonderful things that fit on a single floppy. That machine had great potential, ruined by cruddy marketing.
The weird thing is that it was imported into Australia at the time by a greeting card company (What the hell was that about??) and sold through Myers grace Brothers by underwear salesmen.
A good little machine ruined by distribution and marketing. I still miss it.

I still have a Dreamcast in a cupboard somewhere, haven't used it for years. The graphics on it were far better than the ps2. Nice and sharp, very pc like which is not surprising really seeing as the card was made by a major pc graphics card vendor if I recall.
Also, another good thing about the dreamcast was that it would play copied disks straight out of the box, no modding needed. Not that I had any.
This is probably what caused it's downfall, lack of sales of games due to piracy.

Funny you should say that Fangles, I remember you crawling from the primordial soup. God and I were having a beer you see and he got a little sick hehe... I sneezed and BOOM,the resultant reaction ended up creating life on earth. It was purely accidentalFangbeast wrote:Bleh! getting back on topic... well, there are a few computers that failed that way, shame really. But the grace brothers... was John Inman selling bloody computers then? well I never knew that

According to Wikipedia it was a combination of good marketing by Sony and peoples lack of faith because of the failed Saturn. I must admit I'd REALLY like to see a dreamcast for myself, especially now two of you have praised it to deathDerek wrote:I still have a Dreamcast in a cupboard somewhere, haven't used it for years. {Deep voice} Menswear...grace Brothers by underwear salesmen
[Are you being served reference]
Marketing flacks have killed lots of stuff...
Management as well... Remember the original managers at (was it Sun Park???) thought that a windowed OS and a mouse were ridiculos ideas.
My dad worked at NASA with the two guys who conceptualized the original Compaq Portable. He thought it was a ridiculos idea (as did my stepdad) I thought it was a great idea. They didn't invest. I would have owned Compaq by now!!!

And as for that Compaq thing, you would have been owned by Hewlett Packard now
