PC Search / Index software

Post by pdwyer »

A little while ago I want to download/buy/write a program that could index my harddisk and let me search it quickly. I'd tried google desktop and hated it as you can't open files with alternate programs and similar explorer features and well, not everything has to be web based in my opinion.

I was writing a program to do this for me which indexed into SQLite but found this freeware a little late and abandoned what I was coding.

Anyone else have good search tools? I'm curious if there's other good apps out there, even if they cost money! But they'd have to be good to beat this!

I use SuperCat by No Nosense Software.

http://www.no-nonsense-software.com/supercat/

Not only can you index all the files on your hard drive(s) you can also index files on removable media such as CDs and DVDs.

Been using it for years and it works great.

Single license is $35 USD with discounts for multiple licenses if you need them.

Would like to find something similar in open source so I can integrate my CD carousel into it.

The software that comes with isn't very good. :(

Vista is very fast and efficient on this, i guess there will be no more need of this kind of app.

I do a test, type "pb" and in less than 2 seconds Vista show me a list divided in this types:

-Applications
-Files
-Favorites

Fast and reliable, very nice feature
