Games people play.

Post by Tipperton »

What games do you play?

I just discovered DarkStar One and am really enjoying it. It's a remake of the old Elite game that was released in the mid 80s for the Apple II, Commodore 64, and IBM PC.

There have been a number of attempts to remake Elite, but they all failed because they didn't keep the simplicity of the original game's play. The economics were too complex, or flying the space ship was too complex, or the battle system was too complex, or the game was too heavily scripted loosing the original's open endedness.

If you're looking for a good space flight, combat, trading simulation, I highly recomend this game!

@Tipperton
thanks for the hint. I been looking for a good Elite Remake for years...
found an offer of 13,99€ here in Germany...

--------------------------------------------------

Who likes to play Games of the "Civilization" tradition, might like to test this interesting free-version:
http://c-evo.org/

the grafix is "traditional", means, quite easy done,
but concept and gameplay have some interesting new points, some even better than Sid's version.

and it's made to design AI for.
the Interface is handled via a DLL, it should be possible to write an AI for it in PB...
oh... and have a nice day.

I think I have said it before but I actually bought an Amiga 500 on the day they came out just so I could play Elite in colour.

Like Tipperton said, it is a classic.

@Kaeru Gaman, I also like the Civ type games so will have a look, thanks for the link.

I quite enjoyed playing Age of Empires, especially one on one with a friend, far better than beating the computer.

Hmm... Never new it was also released for the Amiga...

I played Elite on the Apple II. Didn't know it had also been available for the PC until I discovered the first remake attempt...

Have a look at this,

http://www.frontierastro.co.uk/Elite/amiga.html

Can be played on the PC, it has lost a lot of it's looks now though.

Looked really good back in the old days.

btw. there are sites to download "Frontier - Elite II" for free.
needs a DOS-Box though...

I have already tried Frontier - Elite II, it was one of the remake attempts that didn't work...

I'm into Cossacks (very cool game - get it, but make sure you get one of the expansions, the multiplayer and DO NOT get Cossacks 2), and I must say I'm rather good :D.

My favouite non-video game is Texas Hold 'em and I've just come back from winning a tornament :P

Where the hell do you get this game? I can find neither a download link nor
an online store or anything remotely like that, at the URL for the game.
It's like that site is info all about the game, except where to actually get it.
There's no obvious "Download here" or "Buy now" links anywhere. :(
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).
