Keyboard functions without OpenScreen()?

Is it possible to use the keyboard functions without using OpenScreen()?

I want to be able to catch some keyboard entries and also simulate some
keyboard presses in a notepad style app here. Like being able to simulate
CMD+V to activate the hotkeys on the menu of my app to get paste to
work from a button on the apps toolbar.
