Need your help - Installing XP on SATA

hi! i have a big problem atm and i really need some help! I have build the new PC containing following components:

- ASRock AM2XLI Mainboard (AM2 Sockel)
- AMD 3500+ (AM2 Sockel)
- 1 GB DDR2 Ram
- Maxtor 300 GB SATA HD

The bios accept all components like DVD, Harddisk... but when i try to install WinXP Pro, it fails because Windows may not find the SATA drive but the BIOS did it...

I dont have an RAID-Driver-Disk or something (i thought this could be the problem) - but there was no disk included to the original mainboard box.

I have tried some things but without luck to install WinXP Pro... Someone an idea how to get it work? Thanks!

Btw, its a small gift for tomorrow, so i would be happy when the PC works this night thx in advance!

Go to your mainboard page and download the SATA diskette, it should be there.
And press F4 (i think) when the installation is loading.

on the website is only one file for SATA and its size is 4.94MB - also not a disk for installing WinXP ;( http://www.asrock.com/support/download. ... XLI-eSATA2

Sata is NOT original inside Win XP it was later invented. So find the sata disk which Joakim mensioned or slipstream the sata drivers from Asrock into an winxp sp2 version.

Second is your BIOS up to date? If not try that first. That the bios sees your sata drive means nothing. It needs translation from sata to "ide".

if sata drivers are not included in XP, there must be still a way to install it without any problems or? (i am lucky that i have a working PC here to write in this forum)... but what happens for people, wanting installing winXP and have no other PC nor IDE drive ^^

I cant find a driver fitting on disk (for using while WinXP installation). Sure the bios is up to date ^^ its one of the first boards mit AM2 sockel and the bios is the latest version (about 1 week old) - i buyed it in this state.

Atm i really hate the situation, because i cant continue finish the PC and its really a little gift for someone tomorrow :roll:

Here some info found on this:

Installing Windows

Once you have the drive(s) connected you are ready to start installing XP.

Master and Slave

Remeber since it's serial you can only have one device per SATA port/cable so SATA drives don't have jumpers. On the Motherboard SATA1 Port is for the primary device, SATA2 port is for the secondary device etc.

SATA controller driver

Your Motherboard or SATA controller card requires a driver to work properly. If you did not get a Floppy Disk with the SATA driver included with your Motherboard you will have to make one. The SATA drivers can be located on the installation CD that came with your Motherboard or preferably, download the latest SATA controller drivers from the manufacturers site. Once you have located the drivers copy them to a formatted floppy disk. Make sure they are in the root directory i.e. not contained within any folders.

BIOS settings

When you turn on the PC hit the Delete key when prompted and you will enter the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). Here you set the first boot device to be the CDROM drive, the option is usually found under the Advanced Options section but this depends on your BIOS and you may have to look around for it. Once you have done this save and exit.

Installing the SATA controller driver

Once you have set the PC to boot from the CD make sure the XP CD is in the CD drive and start the installation as per usual. Within the first minute or so of the installation Windows will prompt you to press F6 to install RAID or SCSI drivers, do this. Windows will continue to install then ask you to locate the driver. now with the floppy disk created earlier in drive A: select the driver and hit Enter.

With the SATA drivers installed you can now continue the Windows installation as usual.

BIOS settings revisited

Once Windows has finished installing you will need to make sure the PC is set to boot from the SATA drive. To do this make the first boot device SATA if the option is available. If not you have two options: HD0 - If there are no IDE HDs present, or SCSI if you do plan on running an IDE HD as a secondary device.

Wondering what people do that have a notebook and no floppy, but want to make a clean XP install without recovery disks...

do this:

1st .goto maxtor.com website grab the floppy installfor sata driver for your HD. Refer for "knowlege base article #855" at the maxtor.com

2nd. boot winxp installtion, after it loads wait for the buttom screen gray line a prompt that says "Press F6 to boot from RAID or SCSI driver" somthing like that... then just insert and apply the floppy with the sata driver you downloaded from maxtor.com

that should do the trick

i upacked the files to a 3,5" floppy disk and tried to install while windows will install... it failed, because WinXP need a file called "txtsetup.oem"

thanks, some minutes ago i found and tried this too. finaly i have the so called disk with the needed files. (i taked a look to the manual before but didnt saw / found this)

i found on the driver CD the so called *.oem file and a readme with a list what files must be copied to the disk - installing WinXP failed everytime.

Now since i created the disk by booting from the CD (RTFM more as once ) it seems to accept the maxtor sata drive

Now i will go back and try to install WinXP/32 on the new computer. Anyway many many thanks and respect to all people trying to help me to solve this problem and getting the PC finish until tomorrow as a small gift - thanks!
