How to change a screens brightness?

I have been wondering, what is the best way to change the brightness of a 640*480 screen on the fly? I have looked around on the forums but i think im searching for the wrong think as the results i am getting have no relevance. I was thinking perhaps screen gamma?

Thats what i was thinking, is there no more efficient way of doing it? If not its fine, im just making sure its the fastest way of doing things. Also, it seems to change all of the colours also, i just want the screen to appear darker, would it not be best to use a dark alpha sprite for this?
