People don't seem to have tried the Betas of PB 4.0

For everything that's not in any way related to PureBasic. General chat etc...

People don't seem to have tried the Betas of PB 4.0

Post by Nik »

I somehow have the expression that a lot of people didn't try the betas beforehand and now do the same stupid mistakes we had at the beginning for example installing 4.0 over 3.94 if more people had tried the betas we would have had a even better final I think, but well would be cool if smart update could be enabled in the near future so bug fixes come in seemlessly

I haven't tried all the betas, but I tried the beta 4. And I always read the discussions like how to install 4.00 over 3.94 and so on.

I have now the 4 final installed and I just love it.

Actually it should have been more clear that PureBasic 4.00 is not an upgrade from 3.94 but a complete new software package.

There should have been mention (maybe on the download page) that it must be installed in a new folder seperate from 3.94 and that the code is not backwards compatable so 99% of your sources will not compile without fixing.

I'm sure a number of problems would be cleared up for those just getting into PB4 if they knew this little bit of info. ;)

I for an example used the Betas since Beta 1 up to Beta 11, since I was on my Linux box in the morning I haven't tried the final, but im sure all my examples compile very nice since our team switched since Beta 8. (The application is under development so no need for 100% stability), porting the 4000 lines of existing code didn't take more than about 1 hour. It's just clicking compile and changing the every wrong line nothing hard to do if the coding style is good. To me it'ss clear that since Beta 9 Version 4 was already a lot more stable than 3.94 final

Anyway I wish you spagethi code guys much luck

I wonder why there wasn't a simple line added to the download link..
Or am i incorrect maybe?

I'm not a pb fanatic but even 'true' pb users can not be expected to understand all of this and no one can expect that everyone follows all topics on this board.
Imagne someone visitting once per half year..

I AM NOT complaining!
It's just a positive tip that you may not expect users get their info from the forum, you must guide them (until some point).

I am quiet sure there was a lot of work involved for this release.
A few very important things where changed like dynamic strings and afaik even BSTR support, don't know but pb now grows more towards a serious 'compiler' (my opinion of course).
