Is slow on my machine.

Right now I have 16 hours remaining for a DL that you would expect to have down in a few minutes max (an ISO image). This is an improvement though. About 15minutes ago it was suggesting I had days remaining.

Must be using it badly ...?

(I have 9 peers who are showing up as having some kb DL and a bunch of others with 0 kb.)

Also, I can see all their IPs so they can see mine. Is this good?

Now my expected completion is pushing back towards 1 day.

UL rate: 14kbs/sec
DL rate: 5kb/sec
Everything else is now slow as a wet wick.
Estimated completion time is creeping up.
Using up more bandwidth than normal DL would, for sure.

So what's the big deal with bitTorrent?

I've no idea either.

i never use it because like you i've always found it to be slow and unreliable.

i think that all p2p software has simularities when being a bandwidth leech

I have only had great exeprience with BitTorrent.
The client i'm using now is called Shareaza, I used Azureus before.
After some minutes my download speed is normally 50-120Kb\s, but only if the file is popular.
But if you really want things fast I recommend StrongDC++, It's the best and fastest p2p program I have ever used... But it may be harder to find what you want there...

Ah well, I guess that what is sauce for some is poison for others. For me, it sucked. It sucked bandwidth. It sucked processor time. It sucked my IP up into cyberspace for all to see and sucked me in (trying to get ReBirth).

So I blew it away.

I'll go with FTP and HTTP downloads, I think.

Same here. The thing is, BitTorrent is claimed to be the best app for
downloading big files, fast -- such as TV shows, CD images, etc. I've
never seen it go fast AT ALL. I use Shareaza too and the downloads
are much faster there for any given file.

Yeah, and it got much to do with firewalls and stuff...
My friend could'nt open the ports on his firewall, and that made every p2p program suck on his computer.

I'll go with FTP and HTTP downloads, I think.

Then i'll recommend using Internet Download Manager, it can speed up those downloads a lot.

Rebirth? I never got my activation email - pitty.
Else Im sure I would of downloaded the image at minimum 150kb/s - I bet many people has the image by now.

Bitorrent like others depends on the availability of the source...

The max i downloaded was at 300Kb/s (an linux distro)

Normally i get 40 / 50kb ....

Never had a fake, or messup download, so it's better than other p2p in that aspect.

Btw, depending on your Bitorrent client, you'll need enable it's service port on the firewall or the download speed will suffer!

Anyway, the tendency now for P2P is going back to Gnutella (the 1st P2P protocol made by Nullsoft from winamp), because all other protocols are being too controled by authorities....

a tip for bittorrent though is to set your upload speed (as in data sent from your computer) to a lower level. if you have say a 512/128k modem, set the max upload speed at something sensible like 9k. leave downstream as unlimited. you set it to high and you'll find that bittorrent has a bit of a mental and for some unknown reason it just cannot maintain a fast stream.

I can successfully download pretty much any linux DVD iso in around 1.5 to 2.5 hours with my crappy 2mb/256k connection.

Yep and perhaps on some other countries the ISPs will limit the bandwidth to lets say 30gb per month - max. .. like portugal they have that limit on almost every ISP. Lucky enough here in Argentina we prevented that - for now. They wanted to make a stupid limitation of 3gb per month and for every extra gb you downloaded (even if you passed by 1kb) you had to pay 10 bucks (or was it a little more? 13 bucks perhaps) + isp + digitalization service on the telephone provider (this is for adsl). cable - they had something similar in mind.

Heck they even had a calculator where it asked you how many mp3 emails etc you usualy download per month... it gave me around 90gb with normal work usage (I have to download tests - demos - media packs from publisher / developer all the time). So that'd be a billing of 780+30+60=870 bucks per month - RIGHT - you should see that we were not happy with their lame idea.. I believe that Telecom CEO from here bought a pair of gold boxer shorts and we had to pay for them. Lucky enough the "idea" has been killed at least for now.

With that money per month................. a whole direct uplink you can get here. Sorry to say but I hate the french companies that came here to steal our money.
