windows xp bugs me. help!

Post by thefool »

Ok. My windows is starting to iritate me :P

i have 4 questions just for you :)

1)
i installed visual studio.net [yes an original bought one], then suddently
a "just in time" debugger is there. every time a program crashes, a window pops up asking me wich debugger i want to use..
how do i get back to the old error box? (im using windows XP pro)

2)
another question: I installed sp2, it fucked up my computer, i removed it with add/remove programs.. That helped a bit, i just want to know if anyone else has troubles with service pack 2 ? [still XP pro..]

3)
My computer began to act weird lately. So i started to seek out the error, and i found out if i uninstalled ATI Catalyst Control Center, my computer wasnt that annoying anymore.. Anyone else had this problem too?

4)
when i select "uninstall ati graphic driver" in add/remove progz, i can select 2 cards :P a "radeon 9600 XT" and a "radeon 9600 XT secondary"
why?
now i uninstalled all ati software and drivers 3 times, and it still doesnt work as i want it to. my 3d graphic has started to make "tics" lately. So it runs just fine for 4 seconds, make a total stop for maybe a half second and runs 4 seconds again :?

Thanks for all that read this, and a special thanks for those who might can help me.

1) Don't know.. Did an install of Visual Studio once (on win 95) and
experienced the same thing, but I don't how to get rid of it...

2) Some (many?) have trouble when installing SP2 on a machine already
running XP and other software.. Best thing is to make a slipstream
install medium, (new cd). And do a new install with that one..

3) :( Maybe it's running hot..? The GPU..... Read somewhere that some
gfx cards are running on different clock speed in 2D & 3D..
Not shure if it was ATI... That was anyhow a "problem" on that spesific
setup..

4) 2 cards because there's an option for 2 monitors...? Think thats why..
As of the "tic" problem see 3.. :?

Hi olejr. thanks for your reply :)

I dont think its running hot. Its about 42 degrees all the time, according to the temperature sencor on the gpu.
Wonderfully, its not doing it anymore, so it seemed as it was my computers settings..

this is a list over the things that helped me getting it better:

1) REMOVED SP2

2) i turned of File Indexing at all drives
3) i whipped the virtual memory from 1 gb to 3 gb (allthough i have 768 mb ram in the machine)

4) defragmented
5) tweaked and removed some graphical things as effects when clicking menu's etc (actually that slowed down my work anyway :P)

6) system recovery went off
7) tweaked a lot using SpeedXP (freeware, GREAT! helped really much)
8) in speedXP i turned ON that windows xp should put as most as its core in fysical instead of virtual memory.

9) removed some unnecesarry programs running in background.
10) turned on fastwrite for AGP
11) Cleaned my prefetch files to improve performance

and more that i dont remember. but it seems that it all helped a lot.

thanks for the info about making a slipstream install medium, ill try that later when i need sp2 (wich i guess i will at some point..)

sad u didnt know how to turn of the debuggy thingie.

Thanks for ur help :)

gnight, and have a nice day/night (according to where u are in the world hehe)

To kill SP2 restore your system to a step befor installing SP2.

I never gonna install sp2, dont want it, dont need it, dont want to get everything changed here.

I installed sp2 and my computer slowed to a crawl, and nothing worked right. I then made an sp2 slip streamed disk and did a fresh install with that and everything now works fine.

no probs with SP2 here on XP pro? but yet again i use linux for mostly everything these days.... I only really use XP to watch DVD's with and other multimedia stuff as linux sucks major arse at doing that kinda thing IMHO. but on this system, I can honestly say I have had no probs whatsoever with SP2.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AEDebug\Debugger

set default value to:
drwtsn32 -p %ld -e %ld -g

But could be that with this setting the debugger doesn't even work in VC++ :(

I do all that on my slackware 10 install. Mplayer and Xine is all you need to watch DVDs. Do note you will need libdvdread and libdvdcss to view DVDs properly. All modern disks are CSS encrypted.

@The Fool: My advice to you about SP2 is simple. Like most things M$ makes there is about a 50% chance it will work fine and a 50% chance you get screwed by it. In the latter case SYSTEM RESTORE IS YOUR FRIEND! Despite my hating M$ if it wheren't for their crappy OS and software and spyware , I'd not be making the lots of $$ I do fixing it. I hope they keep it up, I like making money repeatedly off of people due to such things.
