Misery continues..
Now i encounter the same 24bit screen issue.
I was following this topic:
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/freitasm/2184
Crtl-Alt-F1 runs the console but i have to login.
I am using the test user and i may continue.
Now i run: nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
(Don't know what sudo bash means)
And it opens the file.
I change but i have no permission to write.
Shall i format all HD's i have because....
n00b was here..

I think you should forget emulating Linux.. if the same error happens over and over, then it's no use trying again and again :\

Hmm, i have a stretched but somewhat readable screen.
I managed to navigate to the file via the desktop (50% is off) and noticed the same issue.
I'm not the owner of the file.
I know i had to give a user twice, the first was debian but somehow i'm not able to log in via that account.

Why not use a virtuell machine that support linux?

(sorry i have german-desktop)

No problems with any linux that i have tested.
The same with VMware-Server.

congrats well done^^
As a side node, don't fool around as root, thats dangerous as the computer will the follow every command however dumb it my be and if you don't know what your doing your likely braking your system (not so dangerous in a virtual machine but bad habbit)

Don't be afraid, I was just as a n00b as you are now, but before 4 years when I first tried Linux..
BLOODY HELL mehri. There is no need to be so elitist, JUST cause you claim to know how to nix

.
Just cause you say Ubuntu is crap, doesn't make it so. Ubuntu is not perfect, but it is in its infancy really.
In order for any linux to put up a good fight against windows, it has to become more like windows.... so yes, make it piss easy for new users, but have good support and paths to show users how powerfull it is under the hood...
So far Ubuntu is doing a pretty damn good job on that front, but it is buggy. just like debian used to be!
personally I do prefer debian, but I tend to stick to stable versions, just so I know drivers work etc. It is all to easy to say "hey this unstable, potentially system destroying version of debian is the best!" when it really could ass rape your pc if you decided to install it for real. hell, it is so much easier to sit back and dist-upgrade later

Hmmmm... I'm begining to change my opinion regarding Ubuntu. It isn't so bad on none virtual systems, i.e. on real hardware. The update function works perfectly and on my "real" pc it hasn't crashed or frozen at all!
