as a purebasic beginner i still might be interested as well, i've been looking at multiplayer online games from a different angle (with a background in datacenters, mobile communications, startup telecom companies and project management for the last 10 years) i've been focussing on a key problem: how to make money

on these things...
as usual, there are the same problems, time, money, people
you want to make it non-profit or profit?

in addition to the message above, i am more than willing to team up with some people to create something less ambitious, and beginners are welcome

Ok, just tell me what do you know or what you willing to do about this game.
Kernel, Graphics, Sound, Storymaker, LevelMaker ...... more or less modules.
I like fallout 2 game and I think that it will be in this direction made, dice system. It doesn't matter if it will be a realtime or on moves.
Seriously, for me the problem is just a graphics, and of course sounds.

well, let's no be too ambitious at first
lessee...
first thing is: what do we want to build? style of game?
- rts or rpg or shooter
- real time or turn based
- 2d isometric or real 3d?
- any good examples of existing games we want to use for 'inspiration'

- server based or not? central server or not?
- number of users depending on world / setting / server / what?
some other things...
- multiplayer on network and online (internet, tcp/ip)
- independent game logic vs. graphic engine vs. sound engine
let's start with using some off the shelf graphics we grab left and right on the net, later we'll plug in some of our own stuff
hmm... okay, comments / suggestions / wishes / improvements?

We are getting a team.
I'm good with 2d games, in any direction, in fact 3d games are more challenge but let it save for a later.
Ok, if you agree with me here is my proposition:
I think that it will be a RPG 2d style. I have already some graphics and we can find like as you said on the net, and I saw some graphic designers site which we can borrow a people if we stuck.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
But I think that's not a problem, we need a story and we need a less work because of mother nature "will" (who's gona make this game for a two years).
So let's just talk about story.

I'm impressed.
That was I call straight forward.
Ok man, if you agree with five pages of story for now. (that's not short belive me). If you want you can erite even more, but I think hat will be enough for now.
From story we will extract what directions about engine will be.
And, if you want I can find some free space and make site to put our progress on it.
C'ya man
