I will have to disagree and take a slightly different stance.

Social Network, etc all have legitimate purposes for long-distance, intra-industry, and other such relations. But they are not destroying the physically social human, Humans are doing that to themselves, and always have been. It is just a different tool this time.

First it was TV, then it was video games, now its The Internet. There is always something people can blame, but the problem always has been and always will be, with the people themselves.

I have yet to see any legitimate use for Facebook that email or a website can't already do. In fact, I find it hilarious when I'm at a company's website, with all their product info and such, and they have a link to "follow them" on Facebook? Um, WHY? I'm at your official website, fools! Put your news, contests and blogs there, like you're supposed to! Duh!

I joined Facebook a few months ago, but only because one of my apps needs to support it. That is, I had to have a Facebook account to see what my users would see when they use my app. My app is not FOR Facebook, but it pulls Facebook's data if the user wants it. So, I had no choice but to sign up.

That said, I did become friends with a few ex-workmates (about 7 of them), despite having their personal email addresses for contact. In the time I've joined, the only stuff they post are things like "Another Saturday and out of laundry detergent again" and "I can't sleep" and "my phone just died trying to upload photos onto facebook". Riveting stuff!

And one of them is a Filipino lady, who speaks perfect English... but all her posts are in Filipino? Yes, she's catering to her bunch of friends, but all her posts are basically useless to me, so I had to hide them.

So, someone tell me again why Facebook is needed?

OK, I'll admit there may be legitimate uses for social networking sites like facebook, the problem is that too many people tend to use them way too much and for the wrong reasons. Even when they are local and could easily get to gether to out and do something together and chat face-to-face and enjoy each other's company, too many people these days take the lazy way out and isolate themselves in their homes, vegitating in front of the computer on sites like facebook or twitter and chat via the internet. After a period of this kind isolationist behavior, when they do eventually get together, they more like strangers than friends....really it's kind of sad...

That may be changing, according to many, the newest changes to Facebook aren't so user friendly either....
