This sort of issue seems to happen to just about every forum (humans, can't live with them, can't mutate them ) I stick around to participate in. Just today I sent a PM off to a company member of another forum to let them know of an issue with a post there.

It stinks when the few try to ruin it for the many. A theme I (we surely) see played out in various venues.

I also notice that when things get 'political' the conversations can heat up - statements like -

I get sick of America thinking that they can bully the rest of the world to do their bidding. It's going to be very interesting in 10-15 years, once China overtakes America in economic clout!

probably don't make it a real cozy place.

Guess we have to try to live and learn.

Yeah - probably best not to judge the forum or community based on what happens in 'off topic'.

Maybe we need a catchy slogan like

The FreeBasic forum has the same problem right now, it went that bad that the admin even hid/closed the off topic section.

The thing about politics is probably a cultural issue, there was an article on this in a big German high quality magazine, it seems like especially in America political discussions are not very common and often people get offended personally, this is completly different here in Europe atleast in Germany discussions on political and religious topics are probably the most common discussions and even though they get heated quite often no one really takes it personally.
While accoring to the article questions or discussions about political or religious topics are only held in private in America and seem to be a pretty personal thing.
I hope we can have the European way here though^^ thats because I think that in a democracy discussions however heated the may be are the source for good ideas, and good politics including compromises everybody can live with.

This sort of issue seems to happen to just about every forum.

Yeah...

I can't count or can't remember all the forums I quit visiting because it began to seem like no matter what the topic was, somebody would find a way to turn it into a heated argument complete with personal attacks on other members for their opinions or beliefs. Or just plain trying to raise themselve up by putting down everyone else. And they did it in a variety of ways such that they could do it in any part of the forum, not just the off-topic or general discussion areas.

Almost makes me seriously consider not having such an area in my forums.

And I agree with the generalization that we are exceedingly populated by testosterone fueled teenagers and grumpy old men... I wish I was one of the teenagers, but I am one of the grumpy...

There are many people that have helped me see where I go wrong in PB. I don't like flames or flamewars. I have to admit that I have seen precious few here, but I have not looked. I may simply be ignorant.

This was one of my favorites!!! Written by a Blitz3der who is now, I think, here with us largely because of the constant flames at Blitz (I AM NOT 100% SURE THIS IS THE CASE BUT I THOUGHT I READ THAT IN HIS INTRO)((one of the reasons I switched anyway!!!))

I agree with Kale that the swearing is a real issue these days.
It never happened in the past. There should be a filter for
that sort of thing, as it's juvenile and unprofessional.

a forum is a highly dynamic system, with dynamic elements, called Users.
each user has an own opinion, and pretents to be smart enough to be able to speak it.

if you want a static, never changing atmosphere, use static users,
never new members, never changing opinion of the users.

...but if you can call that a "forum" then is to doubt.
