It's all very interesting.....

I do think the XBOX 2 is on the right path..... combining Games, PC, TIVO, DVD, Music Player etc..... the complete entertainment system....

It's been a long time coming..... soon we'll ditch the PC's and have the one 'box' which does it all.... is expandable/compatible etc....

I don't know the spec of the PS3, but if it's not going the same way then it will eventually die..... unless it's aimed just at the gaming market... and a lot cheaper!

The 'all in one' box IS the future..... and will look a lot smarter in the household....

Imagine the day when we can plug a keyboard into any 'TV' in the house and program one of the 'virtual' PC's contained within the XBOX9/PS9 with it's 64 way processing power, 64Gb RAM, 10Tb disks etc......

It's coming!

:)

sony decides to dump intel like cpu's and goes to ppc as apple used before
Sony used to use MIPS based processors (I prefer MIPS to PPC, and anything to x86 ;) )

I think it should get interesting when people start programming the PPC in the cell along with the 8 "cells" in ways that Sony don't expect.

I like the xbox2, but when this happens (combined with the incredible speed of of the 3.2Ghz main RAM) - I don't think that the xbox2 will be even close to the power of the ps3.

The xbox360 should leave the PS3 standing. As I understand it, the PS3 will beat the xbox for Multimedia content, but the xbox will leave the PS standing for general workloads (this includes games). Both will be several times more *powerful* than a top-of-the-range 3GHz PC. Lets just hope that M$ don't waste all those precious cycles with longhorn derived bloatware :-(
- Remember the current Xbox uses an 866 MHz Pentium and an XP ?or is it W2K? based kernel.

The Xbox has a 733 MHz cpu, but it can be overclocked to 1.4GHz ;)

Are you crazy? The fsb of the ppc in the ps3 is 3.2ghz, the combined fsb of the xbox2 ppc cores is 700mhz. They will be fighting for ram access or just plain waiting.

Think about your pc, the main speedups are when you have a faster fsb.

Thats a replacement mod, don't try to overclock the existing processor. ;)

Well you can't quite "overclock" the xbox to 1.4Ghz, but you can replace the PIII Processor with a 1.4Ghz chip. The RAM is also expandable up to 128MB.

I must be in the minority here....

I have a PS1 which I occasionally use to play the excellent Tekken IV. But, I'll never buy another console because I love my PC games too much and think the consoles (here in the UK at least) are way overpriced/overhyped. I only have to look at the price of a PS2 game compared to the PC and that's a good enough reason for me to stick to my trusty old desktop :)

I can't program PB on a console. I can't surf the web or download software while burning DVD on a console. I can't write a letter or sort my home finances out on a console. I don't get the very pretty BSOD on a console

Call me a stick in the mud, call me an old fart, call me whatever you like, but I'd rather spend £300 on upgrades for my pooter than some lump of plastic that's only good for playing games and movies (for which I already can do on my PC!).

Flames on a postcard to.....

Jimbo_H, agree.
And lets wait Cell processors or similar go into new computers cores

IBM already sold licence rights to produce Cell to Mercury Computer Systems, which is a military and medical equipment company. They make, sonars, radars, CAT scanners etc...

Toshiba (one of the Cell parents) is also going to use it in is new (digital?) Tv sets
