I was just wondering if someone here has any knowledge on this...
I have an MSI KTV4A motherboard and an AMD Athlon 2400+ thoroughbred CPU which runs at 2GHz using the recomended settings.
The cpu fan I've been using is a cheap one and the other day I installed CoreCenter to check the temperature. It was running at alittle over 70 degrees celcius on idle in Windows.
I have now replaced the fan with abit better case fan and it's now running at around 48 degrees celcius. The other day my favorite game, San Andreas wouldn't run anymore. I'm not sure if it is because of a Windows update I installed or if it's the CPU that is dying. So I installed the D-bracket and all the four led lights light up constantly. In the manual it says it's because the CPU is incorrectly installed or faulty. Does that mean the CPU has been damaged?
CPU Problem ?

I would check the cpu and heat sink are seated correctly then check the bios settings. Mine went up to 80°C the other and the alarm sounded! it was a hot day and my case is in a little cave under my desk'.
I cured it by making the air flow in the case a bit better by installing a few case fans (both blowing out, not in or its dust bunny city!) and reseating the cpu and cleaning the dust from the fan.
Sometimes CPU's can take quite a bit of punishment, i don't think 70°C will have hurt it long term. I know most CPU's have a inbuilt shutoff temp anyway so if you was still going the chances are you didn't reach that temp.

Even with a bad fan it shouldn't have been that high..... maybe the thermal paste has gone bad ?!
I would have thought that if the computer runs..... then if a game doesn't work it's more likely to be down to software than h/ware.... although it could be the H/W if it's crashing to BSOD or reboot....
Did you replace the thermal paste now, with the new fan ? The temp still seems a little on the high side....
Also did you make sure you M/board is set to defaults..... and nothing trying to overclock ?

Thanks for the tips guys.
I went out and bought a new fan and heat sink, Thermaltake Extreme Volcano and I have added new paste that came with the kit. It now runs at around 44 degrees after running N-Bench
I'm really happy about that.
Also bought a Twinmos 1GB DDr400 chip too, so now I have a total of 1.5GHz.
The game, San Andreas still doesn't work though, so I'm suspecting it is caused by one of the latest Windows updates.
I'm gonna try to re-install the game and see if that works, if not I'm gonna post a message on the SA forum, maybe they would know if there are any issues with the latest update from Microsoft.

He he he that's cool. I am very happy with it so far. I am going to try to put aside some money and save up for a AMD 64 CPU and mobo, my brother has a 2.2 GHz AMD 64 CPU and he has overclocked it to 2.45 and it runs with the boxed retail fan and cooler at 25 degrees while in idel and 32 degrees while running 3DMark 2005. That is amazing compared to my old systemdontmailme wrote:I didn't want to infuence you on your choice of kit..... but I have the Volcano too....GeoTrail wrote:Thanks for the tips guys.

I used to buy the latest and greatest in the past myself, but now I tend to site back and wait awhile before upgrading. Specially when it comes to biggest investments like CPU's, PSU's, Mobo's and such. And I usually read all the reviews I can before buying stuff like thatgriz wrote:1.5GB ... a tidy sum!
Updates are risky but necessary. I usually wait for a while before I perform updates to see how stable they will be. Too many previous headaches being an early adopter! Perhaps you should install the latest gpu driver too?
