On another board you can pay a small fee to change someone elses title - could be interesting here
I used this ranks for now, as it seems more logical, and a lot of users agree, and some special ranks for special users.
And I rather fancy being at 'fillet of sole' level permanently (beginner). Intermediate can be haddock, expert can be halibut although you need 3 and a half fish of any species to go to the next ranking and the fins and the scales count.

I'm giving 1€ for you to change your own rank to "Lazy"
Hey Fangbeast, can you send me a truckload ducktape and help me to wrap Num3 in it?
I'll send you a jumbo jet full. Then we cover him with it, beat him with a marlin (really heavy fish with sharp fins). Then you hold him down as I strip the tape off and hear him scream:):)
if he is especially hairy (and I've seen the photos), it will be a good noise.

It would make sense if it's done like in the Euphoria Community, where users can vote for other users contributions and this "vote-value" would change the amount of money they need to pay for a upgrade.
It's called Micro-Economy.
But if you start such a thing today what with all long time users that don't contribute that much anymore, but helped in pb's beginning with code and spread the word about pb?
Also there is no upgrade fee necessary with pb.
So my take:
Scrap the whole ranking system, and don't show the amount of posts.
And while you are at it: kill all avatars, signature, locations and join date information.
All this stuff slows down the forum.
