Since USB uses source termination and voltage-mode drivers, this has to be the case, otherwise reflections can pile up and blow the driver.
Shouldn't it be possible to use a buffer/driver with a proper termination at the end of the extension cable to avoid reflections and hence waveform degradation.?

Just asking, interesting problem.

CPC in Preston (UK) sells a device that converts USB 1 to a 100MBit lan connection and back again, it works as a USB extension - not as a simple USB<->LAN interface. It works with cameras and you can go as far as you like with it. I think its about £50 though - so its pretty expensive.

Aside from wireless cameras, there are also wired 'net cameras' which plug in via ethernet. Dlink, for example, make these. You can provide the power over the Cat5 cable using POE (Power over Ethernet) injectors, etc. so you only need to pull one cable.
with a 4.5 pellet rifle. (with 10 pumps its as powerful as a .22lr is)
Surely you only mean the velocity (fps) is similar? I doubt the pellet is striking with the same energy as a 40 grain (standard size) 22 LR bullet.

If you have a known cable length with known cable characteristics, then it would be possible. The world of PCs is less than a known environment though.
