Which DirectX version you use ?

Hi !
When you are programming using DirectX api, which version of the api are you using ?
Because it appears that (well, I've heard that) some old cards are not DirectX9 compatible BUT are DirectX7 compatible, for example
And... I guess everybody have DirectX9 installed, so when you're calling a DirectX7 specific command, well, how does that work ? DirectX9 has them included ?

i use the DX stuff used by PB (also DX7) but i would like to use latest DX9c if i could code with DX9 API! On my system i use DX9.0c (feb2005 release)
