Excel file format information - requesting!

Hello, Im in the need of info from the excel format.
I need to open and parse the data of an xls in PB (and display contents in a listicon gadget).

And possibly save into .xls back.
COM ? DDE? (and I believe theres another way as well).

But why not reading the file by your own? I mean isnt it possible? I dont know anything about this file format (although got some pdfs now about it, so, to read!).

Thanks! I got similar documentation but helps a lot.
Although, who would send an artist to programm such a thing (me - not a hardcore programmer- ).
