I was going to re-install Win98se today but was shocked during the
setup by a message stating my NTFS drive wouldn't be recognized.
I finished the install anyway and sure enough my NTFS drive wasn't
shown in My Computer.
I find it very hard to believe that Win98se can't see NTFS drives...
Is that really true? Is there a way around it? Thanks for any tips.
BTW, I just found this product...
http://www.winternals.com/products/fct/ntfswin98.asp
...but is there a better/free/native way to access NTFS drives?
Win98se and NTFS drives

Yes, its true.
Please remember that Win98 is very old and crappy.

I also know NTFSdos/NTFSwin98 for this only.
A free version that can _read_ only is available:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freew ... in98.shtml
If reading is not enough and it must be free,
convert your partition to FAT32.

True, but it's extremely light-weight compared to Win2K and XP.
I only have a 667mhz PC and W2K/XP are too slow, and I can't
afford to upgrade for the next 2 years or so.

Unfortunately I need NTFS because I do a lot of video capture, and
using FAT32 means you can only capture up to 4 GB in a single file.
Yes, I know there are capture apps that split the capture into many
files, but I don't want that either.
Looks like Win2K is my only option, because I like to play games too
and I understand that WinNT doesn't support DirectX.
Dammit.
(And for those wondering if I really own all these OSes: yes, I have
a friend who works for Unisys and gets me OEM versions cheaply).

Is your processor a "light" CPU like Celeron only ??
Do you have enough memory (_at least_ 256MB) ??
Do you use software video capturing ?? *wondering*
With a video capture card that does compression in hardware
and maybe SCSI HDD´s, it shouldnt be a problem at all.

No, it's like yours: Pentium III @ 667 mhz.

Yes, I also have 512 MB.

No, I capture from a MiniDV camcorder to a hardware capture card,
via the card's DV-IN socket.
I have settled for Win2K again, but it still feels a bit slower than
a Win98se install. Then again, I suppose the benefit of being a much
stronger OS is more important than the speed...
