PB Linux Mail Server

Post by kake26 »

Hi all,
Well, I think its crazy to do that but I'm gonna do it anyway. I mean heck if I can write a SMTP server in perl I can do it PB no problem. Before I do I'm curious as to who would like to see me do it. I can translate the perl code to PB in about 30 min to an hour if I test along the way. I'll make hacks for stuff if I need them as well as end up using my own daemon lib I wrote for the linux version of PB. should be quick and cool.

Go for it, something like that could be very useful for small distros that are tight on space.

I'd really like to see a tiny mail server for linux and also working on windows! Hope you succeed. :D

Its not gonna be a really huge server like send mail or nothing. Just a small smtp with where you can create accounts and send and recieve mail with. Its gonna support only a tiny chunck of the SMTP protocol. Just enough to work properly. I promise no PhD require to configure this one. I'll make a very simple cli interface to configure it. I may even write a small GUI tool.

I almost forgot to mention this, WINDOWS? Lol, ok if you say so. This little server will work on *nix and win32. Just remeber win32 is a ueber pain in the butt and I don't use windows at all. I'm certainly not gonna test the server on win32, that you can do if you want. I'm writting it in PB and thats it, it should work under win32 just fine pending a compile on that platform, but I make no promise.

Well, I'm not sure its been a while since I've done anything in PB. I've in the mean time wrote a mail server in another language. However, I think translating it to PB is not half bad. I think I should have done it in PB first, but I lacked the expiriance with ODBC stuff. I now have unixodbc working under my linux and know how to use it. There fore a mail server that uses a MySQL DB to store its info is not a bad idea. give the fact that there is very little needed to make a minium SMTP system work.

Not really. PB is perfectly capable of doing it. Though it was alot faster to build the perl version.
