If you used U.S. PayPal during Oct 1, 1999 through January 31, 2004 then
you may be entitled to claim a bit of compo from them:

yeah, i got an email about it. was pretty confusing going through all that legalspeak, but i haven't decided what to do about it yet...probably nothing as the last "class action" lawsuit i was a part of only produced a check of less than $1US (can't remember the exact amount, but i know it was less than a buck). i didn't even know about the lawsuit until i got that check in the mail one day (it was for a panasonic tv that i had purchased and sent in the reg card for...can't even remember what that lawsuit was about).

Whoa!

Careful guys..., the links in the email that I received DO NOT work to
access the settlement claim form.

PayPal states that they always require you to log in to your account to
get critical information from them. This one does not follow that
claim.

Sure, PayPal has agreed to a settlement to a class action suit. But is
this the way you would be notified? An email?

The email I received was addressed to an email address that I never
had registered with PayPal. Strange to me. Maybe I am just being
too suspicious.

Maybe this is someone doing an excelent job of "phishing" for your
information. If they know about your account with PayPal and enough
to send you the email, couldn't they just send you the settlement you
are entitled too?

good to be careful, but the link posted by PB above (which actually goes to an "Urban Legends" site that i often read) also has a link to both a ZDNet and CNet news.com article about the lawsuit.

that being said, when i tried to access the settlement site earlier, i couldn't get on either (though i just wrote it off as being bombarded with hits for more info).

Your assumption is probably correct. As I said, I received the actual email
because my PayPal account was frozen and PayPal is well aware of
that. It remains frozen today, not that I care or would ever use them
again.

The link in the email takes you to what appears to be a PayPal page
but then forwards you to another site. That link did not work for me for
the past two days. It does seem to be working now. but I still can't
access the actual claim form. Probably just the volume.

I am one of the lucky ones. Took me about 9 months to get my money
back from them. Fortunately, it was a relatively small account.

9 months...yikes! 8O

fortunately i've only ever used paypal for purchases so i've never had any issues with funds transfers (used up my initial funds transfer years ago).

I got the same confusing email and discounted the whole issue as you did for the same reason - previous settlement I got involved with was less than a dollar.

I thought PayPal was convenient until they started telling me they needed my personal checking ID and account info. That's when I stopped using PayPal. There is absolutely no reason for any institutuion to require such information to accept your credit card purchase... ever! The fact that you have a credit card is in itself the only declaration they should need to establish credit worthiness. If you weren't worthy, the credit card company would not have issued the card in the first place.

BTW - it's not just for US Pay Pal clients. It's for the world client base less countries mentioned in the email.
