PB was made unicode-only in 5.50, and the last version to support Ascii (8-bit characters) was the 5.4x LTS series, I believe 5.44 was the latest.

The last 5.4x LTS version with both ASCII and Unicode support was 5.46 from 7th January 2018 as written in the PureBasic news.
