No, sda should exist in /dev
Try

ls -la /dev/sd*

to look for devices.
I have a Mandrake distro and all this is automatically, I don't know what changed in Move version.

I had a Knoppix CD. Version 3.4 and it found my USB pen.
But I can\t copy anything to it. Just says I don't have permission.

Feel like pounding Torvald right now

Because knoppix mount all devices as read only to prevent writes, but you can unmount the usb pen and mount again. Then you can (please God please) write in memory card.

oh, i do these kind of things the easy way... i assume you can still read your drive, even from dos?

if so, i either...

plug in me old external zip drive, load up a dos disk with the drivers, and there i go

or, as every machine i got here has multiple paritions, and most of them two harddrives... i create a new partition, or wipe an old one, and move everything i gotta' save there

or, i plug in an old spare harddrive as slave, and copy it there

ah, the joy of a dos prompt

in fact, you're *LUCKY* as you converted your DATA without a backup, you must be kiddin'! what would have happened if a power outage would have taken place during conversion?!? very dangerous habit...

blueznl, I actually do have an old ZIP drive laying around. But that has a USB connection also.
So I can't get access to the USB devices under DOS. As far as I know.

And yes, I can access the drive in question with a DOS boot disk. But since my other drives are NTFS I have nowhere to copy the files I need to backup. I have an old program called Norton Ghost which runs in DOS, but I'm affraid it will copy the errors from the partition of the drive into the image file as well as the files. Might be wrong and please correct me if so is...

Can't really remember we EVER having a power outage here before. If so, it's been years ago so I winged it.

And I've used Partition Magic alot in the past and have never had any problems with it. That's why I didn't backup. BTW, the drive I'm having problems with IS my backup drive.

When, or if I get it going again, I'm gonna burn everything on a DVD and hide it in a safe

In knoppix you can right-click in usb desktop icon. There must be un/mount options.

I DID IT!!

Yes, finally.
Unmounting and remounting didn't work. Here's what I did:

Right clicked the device on the desktop and selected actions, Change read/write mode.
Then it asked if I wanted to make it writeable, and yes.

A big thank you to everyone who posted in here to help me out.
Now I just have to backup my files, reformat the drive and I'm smiling again. Finally
