I hope your HDDs only have 3,5" :D

Why would you do that? It's much easier to just use git.
RASHAD wrote: Mon Jul 31, 2023 6:23 pm Use Toshiba for HDD(WD is not that good)
I can not second that. I am using WD harddisks since more than 20 years now and all of them are still working although I replaced them with bigger ones since a few years now.

But if you run multiple spinning disks in the same housing please buy the models that are suited for extensive vibrations.

Hi NicTheQuick
You are lucky with your WD
I work in the business of hardware for as long as 30 years for now
WD is the worst HDD 3.5 & 5.25 internal and external
My self I lost one 1 TB 2.5 and 3 1 TB 5.25 in a short time

For using different versions to compare and get what you just did wrong in no time

Well, looks like we did not use the same models then. I only had trouble with Seagate so far.

I still think you mean 3.5" and not 5.25" because that's as big as a CD drive. 5.25" HDDs must came from way before the year 2000. Or what model are you talking about?

I do not understand what you are saying.

First: I don't know your LinkedIn. Second: why should I?

Hi everyone,

First at all, thanks to all, for the good advice.

Here is the next status of my HDD problem.
This is not at all my domain of work/knowledge,
So, ...
I ordered the 4TB SSD Samsung

Why ?

For now it is a temporally, read (low budget) solution.
I have no confidential data, so no need to encrypt data.
Only source codes of my programs, and my 2D/3D design work CAD/CAM, and my website (source/backup) data.
And as I was reading in one of the posts, I don't need RAID1 configuration for my backups.

PRO:
+ Faster copy rate +-1000 MB/s
+ Very small item, size of a (thick) bankcard, I can take it with me in my pocket.
+ Protected for falling with rubber case.
+ No mechanical parts.
+ USB-C connection.
+ I can copy my new internal 4TB SSD -> external 4TB SSD with same partitions. (4x +-1TB)
personally, good and simple for my PC/windows knowledge level.

CONS:
- But no repair if broke (electronics).
- New for me, never used SSD before as backup item ?
- No copy on other places via internet, only local.
- For now, no 3/2/1 backup plan !@#$%^&*

I hope I made the good decision ...

Thanks for all the advice,
Marc

PS:
I used lacie HDD in the past who broke,
WD HDD who broke, seagate HDD who broke, and toshiba HDD who broke ...

So, the thing is, if you don't know the reason why they broke,
and as long it is no mechanical problem, you can not judge the HDD manufacturers.
Power fail, mechanical shock, virus, ...
I my case it was for 99% a power fail problem, so I can't blame seagate for that.

PS: sorry for my english I speak flemish ...

I think, after having read statistics views (and copied on this subject), we cannot advice one manufacturer, or one other one.

The HDD model is for a lot, in a normal way (no virus, for ex.). But a "non normal" ever happens.

Keep an external HDD plugged in, can drive to a non normal way (shock or virus). The external HDDs often are strong to resist against the mechanical shocks if there are off.
But when they turn on, as all HDD, they are very fragile. The heads and magnetic surfaces are very close.

And the viruses can affect FATs or strategic datas.

For SSD, one thing I never would do is a defragmentation.

I first tried with the "good" IronWolf in my NAS, but they are crap. I'm all Toshiba now and never had any problem (13 HDDs variing from 4 to 20TB).

It's mostly how you treat your HDD. Mine are always on, no sleep, no powerdown, plus a reliable UPS. The oldest one has run 60000 hours now.
But this still doesn't make backups obsolete.

Also, I personally don't trust SSDs yet and don't use them for important data.
Good morning, that's a nice tnetennba!
