This is why there's so much spam here
I just created this test account and there was NO captchpa or security test needed to create the account. I literally just signed up with Mailinator here and verified my membership. So easy for spam bots to create an account. In the past, we had to prove we were human but this is not the case anymore.

On the German board reCaptcha is enabled but I did not check if it works correctly. However reCaptcha usually only shows itself if it thinks you are a potential bot.
The english grammar is freeware, you can use it freely - But it's not Open Source, i.e. you can not change it or publish it in altered way.

Why not enabling some captchas generally? I mean, I only sign up once, so a few hurdles should be acceptable.

The reCaptcha didn't do a thing, I even called myself a bot thinking it might be smart

recaptcha 3 just check if the register is a human, not a bot. It usually does a good work

The new bots are using ai content generation, it's becoming a bit of a challenge to spot them and they're becoming quite plausible I think there's a couple that have got a dozen answers before anyone's flagged it.

If the latest spam is sent using AI, we must admit that they are quite strong.
By looking at the latest SendFTPFile() file 0 byte topic,
A part comes from the PB help with a modified server address, a 2nd bot that takes over after the 1st one. There is probably a manual part.
Otherwise, apart from boring us (pissing us off), what are their goals, their interest in a dev forum, there are no ads in the latest ?
Is it a game, challenges for some kids developers learning AI ?
In any case, it would be good to have a new members group with some limits of publications, time between 2 posts, no PM, no url... it gets really boring.

The ads come later, after the bots are established. Seen it here before. No ads in their sig initially, then a few posts later when we haven't deleted them, the ads get inserted.

I recently signed up on another website forum and my first 20 posts made me do a captcha to publish them. A tad annoying at first, but now I don't have to because I'm established there. Surely phpBB (this forum) would support that?

I think we should have a procedure of captcha "unique" (not a standard phpBB plugin) so even the AI bots will have problems to enter because they doesn't know the correct steps.
Example:
Show a long text where some words are on diferent colors an ask the usea to write the word with a particular color. The Text different each time and the html tags different as well, etc, etc..
For sure an AI can beat that capcha if he knows it, but if he enter espect a standar PHPBB, he have no clue, until an human teach him (I doub someone take that work to send spam to an unique web site).
Forbid post the same day you sign up can also help.
