This came up yesterday at work. A guy I work with says that PC should be abolished completely because it's not society's place to tell people how to think or what to say and that PC infringes on freedom of speech.

I didn't say anything to him but it made me wonder if there are others who feel the same way.

I believe that some PC has gone too far such as people getting offended over small things like being called "hearing impaired" over "auditorily (I'm not even sure how you would spell such a word!) challenged."

I actually heard this conversation in the mall one day between a man and woman (I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but they were at the table next to me in the food court) and she was all bent out of shape because one of her friend's boyfriends had called her hearing impaired.

So what do you think? Has Pc gone too far? If so, how do you think it can be stopped? Is there not enough PC in the world?

Your thoughts please.

I thought "hearing impaired" was PC (it couldn't even translate directly it to Spanish). What's wrong with "deaf"? Saying that someone is deaf means that he/she can't hear, that's all. I think that woman you describe was upset because she was not refered to as "deaf" (BTW, "auditorily challenged" remembers me some Tom Sharpe's books). I think it's good practice to be polite talking to people. PC language tends to be stupid.

Just my opinion. Bye,

That's what I was thinking. I suppose people with only slight hearing
might get angry at being called "deaf" because, as you say, deaf means
no hearing at all. Political correctness is pathetic.

BTW, Bibbouk, that's a weird topic for your first post in a programming
forum... what made you bring it up?

PB, the forum may be programming, but this is the "off topic" folder :):) (Almost anything goes, except decomposing trout" :):)

I know, I know. I just thought it was strange that a first post by
someone was to do with political correctness... it's like they got
"lost" and posted here by mistake or something. :) Like if I went to
a knitting forum and posted a message about how beer tastes great...

Maybe I'm being cynical but I suspect bibbouk's post is just to promote xdate.co.uk. (even if no-one clicks the link from this page I think it improves search engine rankings if there is more sites linking to their page)

YES! :)

This exactly what I was thinking but was hesitant to say, lest I be
accused of "being harsh on the newbie". I suspected spam all along.

Hehehe -- I've seen it all when it comes to spammers and their techniques.

That'd be up to Leigh to decide. Perhaps wait and see if it's going
to become a recurring problem first, though.
