In 'Browser Limbo' due to Planned Obsolescence?

Post by heartbone »

I had the feeling that this was going to be a big year for zombies. 8)
Anyhow I suppose this is old news, but I am still running XP and it looks like my IE lost M$ "support".

"A huge chunk of Microsoft users will today be cut off from the computing giant’s security lifeline,
for January 12 is the day when Redmond will stop releasing security fixes for a swathe of legacy versions of Internet Explorer.

Extended support has finished for IE8, 9 and 10 on Windows 7 SP1. Only the following are still supported:

IE9 on Vista SP2
IE10 on Windows Server 2012, since IE11 isn’t available for it
IE9 on Windows Server 2008

The sweet spot for Microsoft is IE11 on Windows 10.

But three-quarters – 74 per cent – of Microsoft’s browser base has missed the date for moving. That’s according to a survey from application migration expert Camwood.
"

In December 2015 according to http://www.netmarketshare.com,
Desktop Browser Market Share of Internet Explorer = 48.57%
Desktop OS Market Share WinXP+7= 66.61%

74% of the IE user base missed the date for moving!

The bottom line ye abandoned IEers?
Two choices, one is to install IE11 and be faced with the same situation in a few short years,
or install Mozilla's Firefox because it's the best, most flexible, and most stable alternative browser.
And if you don't like their Chromium wannabe look, the "Classic Theme Restorer" add-on is essential for restoring the familiar look and functionality.

After disabling IE 8 (the last available on XP) due to security holes, I found that I had to reactivate it because a few installed apps (such as Yahoo! Messenger) actually depend on it to function.
There is so much increasing pressure on me to 'upgrade' to Vista 10, or be forced to run 'insecure' software, or stop using old stuff like Messenger.
Keep it BASIC.
