There are flaws with the idea but in general having those interested in having specific functionality being added pay for it seems reasonable. Maybe you could get a KickStarter campaign for specific upgrades. Or, without losing money to KickStarter, just post an Off-Topic thread to get a group of people willing to contribute and negotiate the rest via PM's.
