3d editors..

Post by thefool »

Hi! I just want to know, when you make a game, what programs do you use? I havent programmed games before. but i want to know. What do you use as Map Editors. What do you use as model designers.
It can be any program you use. I know Blender. I cant use it, but it is cheap and looks nice. Please help a newbie...

I use Wings3D for modeling. Very easy to use and free. Art Of Illusion (AOI) for rendering, which is also a great modeler and it's free. :D

Pixia -> photo edition.
Terragen -> photorealistic scenery generator.

All free ;)

If you have the money to spare, if your a student its cheaper, and you are familiar with AutoCAD at all. Then I strongly suggest you take a look at a program made by the same people who made AutoCAD which is called Rhinocerous. If you know AutoCAD then you will feel right at home using Rhino to do 3d modelling. Rhino is primarily a nurbs modeller but you are not limited to that. I find that I can cook up decent models rather quickly with it.

If you are wanting to learn these programs are great, you can get a 30 day trial but they are $$$ to buy:

3d Modeler >> 3D Studio Max $$$
Graphic Editor >> Macromedia Fireworks or Adobe Photoshop $$$
Sounds/Music Loops >> http://www.flashkit.com/ << VERY useful site (especailly for Macromedia Flash)

Hope this helps.

Well if you seruos about game making.

For 3D modeling use 3D Studio MAX without thinking tvice.
You got there everything you mat posibly need to make sprites
and models.The bad thing it his price of course.

For graphic editing i personaly use Pain Shop Pro 7.0

And for music making you have a lot great programs out there.
ModPlugTracker , FruityLoops , Cacewalk .

@ Tiger, yeah you said it !!!
Pain Shop Pro 7.0
ITS A PAIN!! hahaha.. I suggest Adobe Photoshop 7.0 instead ;)

As for modeller.. AC3D is very good, of course 3dsmax5 (the one i have..) is better, but AC3D saves me on quick jobs ;)

I also use AC3D for level designing and texturing, then I use my lightmapper (I'm a blitz3d user, for making games nothing better to me!) for lightmapping the scenarios.

For audio as driaktravo said, flashkit is a good resource, but I dont see the point of using downloaded stuff for your game.. You'll be proud if the game is made with the stuff you made, and not with a bunch of downloaded codes, sprites, textures, models, animations, music, sounds, even concepts.... Its ugly! anyway if this is your first game.. you can still download some stuff you're unable to create by your own.. just don't forget to give real credits.
